Inspired by the national government’s “Bawat Barangay Makikinabang” (BBM) scholarship program of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Barangay San Agustin in San Jose town, Occidental Mindoro, plans to set aside ₱100,000 for student assistance in 2027.

Barangay Captain Gerry Peradilla said the initiative came after the barangay saw strong demand for educational assistance when it invited fourth-year college students to apply for scholarships under the national program.

Under the scholarship program, the barangay was allotted funding for five scholars, each receiving ₱20,000. Peradilla said the barangay council selected students who were considered most in need of assistance.

However, after more students attended the scholarship selection and expressed their need for support, the barangay council decided to use available savings to extend assistance to 33 additional students, giving each ₱3,000.

During its 2027 budget preparation, the council agreed to allocate ₱100,000 for the scholarship program, intended for students who need financial assistance and are determined to finish their studies.

Peradilla said the barangay council will formalize the proposed scholarship guidelines through a barangay council resolution. Among the considerations being discussed are applicants’ financial condition and their determination to complete their education. | via Voltaire Dequina/PIA
