1st district of samar, Hon. Stephen James Tan. "This activity center, this is more than a structure. This is telling us that there is hope" aniya na nagbigay pag-asa at inspirasyon sa bawat mag-aaral ng SPNHS.

"Failure is no opposite to success; it is part of our journey towards greatness." The business realm is expansiveโ€”but the world itself is already a vast place; it's filled with experiences greater than what we've already met and learned through. These were the words that Sir Rico left etched into the minds and hearts of young entrepreneurs who aspire to become something, to leave a legacy for all to remember.

A successful business starts with a plan. Cultivate the plan with competence, character, and capabilityโ€”you'll end up with a result born from your own determination, ability, and ideals.

On February 23, 2026, the Annual Entrepreneurship Feast Day has finally commenced. During the event, distinguished businessmen and women came to visit and give students their own piece of advice on what they need, what to do, and what to expect in the world of business. The program started with an energetic intermission presented by the Kilas Dance Company, and then came the opening speeches and inspirational quotes left by the selected respectable guests.

This yearly event had a goal that enriches the aptitude of young entrepreneur aspirants and showcases their proficiency through an activity in which they have to market their own products. The more merchandise sold, the higher the marks they receive. The students actively promote their products with their own kind of charms and witty schemes; each section was granted a stall to which they freely express their own creative sides and concepts to further attract fellow students and buyers. They advertised a variety of foods and trinkets and even had a mini game to encourage more customers in their stalls.

Each stall had their versions of how they appeal to their buyers, like how the a few stalls focused on their visual presentation and pleased their clients with the aesthetic and theme they're going for. While the others believed in quality over quantity in their output, they made sure their customers enjoyed and felt satisfied by their own purchases. Nonetheless, they made sure to accommodate the needs of their consumers with a bright smile and outgoing energy that helped throughout the event.

Everything starts small and fragile before becoming something that even the strongest winds can't take down, though there is a price to payโ€”it includes you, the time, energy, and mind to become a great figure. The event served to be helpful through their academic journey and to their goal of becoming one of the successful people in business; it also benefitted them by allowing them to create unforgettable memories and experiencesโ€”making connections and meeting with various people. This gathering became one of the solid fundamentals of not only a businessman or woman but also a person.

What are we really fixing: the calendar or the educational crisis?

On February 13, 2026, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara announced a proposed shift to a trimester system beginning School Year 2026โ€“2027. The 201 school days will be redistributed into three terms, each divided into Instructional and Enrichment Blocks.

Sec. Angara framed the move as a โ€œholistic approachโ€ to reform, promising longer continuous learning periods, better lesson pacing, and reduced administrative burden for teachers. DepEd argues that protecting instructional time is necessary to address the โ€œproficiency collapseโ€ flagged by Edcom II.

On paper, the logic is sound.

For years, the four-quarter system has been crowded by nearly 150 legislated activities and compliance-driven interruptions. Teachers juggle lesson delivery with school forms, reports, and mandated events. Burnout is real. Instructional time has been fragmented.

But reform becomes risky when structure changes faster than consensus builds.

On February 16, even Malacaรฑang, through Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, stressed that the proposal must undergo thorough study and broad consultation.

That caution matters. Education reforms are not software updates; they reshape the daily lives of millions of students and teachers.

Public reaction reflects this tension. Teachers appreciate the idea of separating teaching from paperwork through Enrichment Blocks. Yet skepticism persists. Groups have warned that compressing the curriculum into three terms may simply intensify daily workload rather than ease it.

And beneath the policy debate lies a deeper fear: What happens to the soul of basic education?

If โ€œprotecting instructional timeโ€ results in the drastic reduction or mere classroom integration of cornerstone events like the National Schools Press Conference, National Festival of Talents, and Palarong Pambansa, the system risks an identity crisis.

These are not extracurricular distractions. They are developmental arenas.

The Press Conference sharpens critical thinking and journalism ethics. Palarong Pambansa fuels grassroots athletic development. The Festival of Talents nurtures culture, artistry, and indigenous pride. For many students in specialized programs, these events are not optional add-ons. They are the reason they stay motivated.

Remove the โ€œpressure valves,โ€ and academic burnout intensifies. Turn school into a purely compliance-driven environment, and morale declines. Education cannot become a factory that produces test-takers but neglects athletes, artists, and writers.

The learning crisis is real. Teachers deserve protection from administrative overload. Students deserve coherent pacing.

But perhaps the braver reform is not simply rearranging the academic calendar. Perhaps it is confronting the congestion caused by excessive mandates and political insertions into school schedules.

Reform is not the problem. Reform without deliberate consultation is.

Before we finalize a new calendar, we must answer the harder question: Are we redesigning education to improve learning or unintentionally narrowing it to what fits neatly inside 201 protected days?

And if the answer is the latter, then we are not reforming education. We are shrinking it.
