October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Early detection significantly improves breast cancer outcomes. Here are the most practical tips, broken down into what you can do at home and with your doctor:

โ€‹1. Know Your Breasts (Breast Self-Awareness)
โ€‹The goal is to know what is normal for you so you can quickly spot any changes.

โ—โ€‹Perform Regular Self-Checks:
โ€‹Once a month, check your breasts for any changes in a way that is comfortable for you (e.g., in the shower, lying down, or in front of a mirror).
โ€‹The best time is a few days after your period ends, when breasts are least swollen or tender.

โ—โ€‹What to Look For: Report any of the following changes to your doctor immediately:
โ—‹โ€‹A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit.
โ—‹โ€‹Changes in the size or shape of the breast.
โ—‹โ€‹Skin changes such as dimpling, puckering, redness, or scaly skin (like an orange peel).
โ—‹โ€‹Nipple changes, such as the ni**le turning inward (inversion), or unusual discharge (especially clear or bloody discharge).
โ—‹โ€‹Persistent pain in one spot that doesn't go away.

โ€‹2. Clinical Breast Exams (CBE)
โ€‹During your annual physical or check-up, ask your healthcare provider to perform a clinical breast exam (CBE).
โ€‹Your doctor or nurse will physically examine your breasts and lymph nodes for lumps or other changes.

โ€‹3. Screening Mammograms
โ€‹A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast that can often find changes years before you can feel them.
โ—Discuss Guidelines with Your Doctor: Most major health organizations recommend that women at average risk for breast cancer start getting mammograms:
โ—‹โ€‹Option to start annually at age 40.
โ—‹โ€‹Annually from age 45 to 54.
โ—‹โ€‹Every 1 to 2 years for women 55 and older.

โ—โ€‹Know Your Risk Factors: If you have risk factors (like a strong family history, known genetic mutations, or prior chest radiation), you may need to start screening earlier or have additional tests (like an MRI). Talk to your doctor about a personalized screening schedule.

โ€‹Key Action Point
โ€‹The single most important tip is do not ignore a change. If you notice anything new, unusual, or concerning about your breast, ni**le, or underarm area, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider right away.

Early detection saves lives.
