Imagine being a tiny dwarf, fighting two towering giants at once. Can you win the battle? This mirrors the life of a student leaderโa constant silent battle of a lone warrior.
Student leadership is not something that puts one in a position of authority. Instead, it entrusts one with a great responsibility that not everyone can carry. Some might say that student leaders only have a simple job- to organize school events, carry heavy stacks of chairs, and do the scut work. Little did they know, this misconception barely scratches reality.
From personal experience, the life of a student leader is more of a bittersweet journey. The bitter side roots from the sacrifices made, investing less time in academics to meet organizational deadlines, managing high expectations from school stakeholders, and enduring harsh criticism-being misunderstood and unreasonably criticized by others which made me realize that no matter what you do, and how much effort you exert, people are never silent and they will always have something to say, interestingly always finding the bad in good, and never the good in bad.
Nonetheless, the sweet taste lies in the fact that as student leaders, we are of service to the student body and the school community. By service, we earn nothing but invest almost everything to the people we serve, may it be our time, energy, and even some of our resources. It might be fulfilling in some way, but if we come to think of it, though we are no ordinary students, the fact that we are students still remains. We also have homeworks to do, passing grades to maintain, and scholarships to secure. This constant balancing act between academics and extracurricular activities leaves little to no room for failure or even moments of rest and this unfortunately leads to decreased productivity and poor performance, taking a toll on the student leadersโ physical, emotional and most especially, mental well-being.
In moments like this, who do we blame? Is it the student leaders themselves, or is it the unrealistic expectations imposed on them?
All it takes is a little bit of understanding. Schools, institutions, teachers and other students alike expect student leaders to juggle leadership roles, meet organizational demands, and perform well academically without providing them adequate support and understanding. The lack of empathy upon these individuals leads to increased pressure resulting in poor outcomes. If this continues, the role of a student leader will remain a bittersweet journey of no gain but more pain.
Student leadership is a noble pursuit, but it shouldnโt come at the expense of a young individualโs well-being. True leadership doesnโt only mean serving othersโit means fostering a system that nurtures, supports and transforms leaders, allowing them to thrive without compromising their own growth. Instead of raising the bar too high, why not first see beyond what meets the eye?
