TODAY'S PICK ๐
IMOโs original mandate was principally concerned with maritime safety. However, as the custodian of the 1954 OILPOL Convention, the Organization, soon after it began functioning in 1959, assumed responsibility for pollution issues and subsequently has, over many years, adopted a wide range of measures to prevent and control pollution caused by ships and to mitigate the effects of any damage that may occur as a result of maritime operations and accidents. The main regulations for preventing pollution from ships are covered by IMOโs MARPOL 73/78 - the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, which entered into force in October 1983. It has been
continuously reviewed and amended as and when deemed necessary.
Continuing IMO initiatives and processes for conventions to bring cleaner seas are focused through its Marine Environment Protection Committee - MEPC - established in 1973. Maritime education and training plays a vital role for maritime students to be made aware of the responsibilities resting on their broad shoulders, when time comes that they will be sailing their respective ships on our worldโs oceans. This course notes are collection of information available on the reliable web sources and compiled from various references, used in the development of this course package.
The chapters included in these course notes are the basic learning objectives that are required by the National and International minimum standard requirements which composed the course, โProtection of the Marine Environment (MARPOL ANNEXES I-VI)โ.
