Technology has become an essential part of everyday life. From sending messages and attending online classes to making digital payments and accessing information, people depend on technology in countless ways. However, behind every functioning system, reliable network and digital service are people who make sure technology continues to work: IT professionals.

IT professionals do more than fix computers. They build and maintain networks, manage databases, develop software, protect information, troubleshoot technical problems and help organizations use technology effectively. Their work supports schools, businesses, hospitals, government offices and communities that increasingly depend on digital systems.

As technology continues to advance, the role of IT professionals becomes even more important. New technologies provide convenience and opportunities but they also bring challenges such as cybersecurity threats, data privacy concerns, system failures and the need to keep digital services reliable. IT professionals help address these challenges by creating solutions and keeping digital systems secure and functional.

Much of their work happens behind the scenes. People may only see a screen, application, website, or connected device but numerous systems and technical processes make these tools possible. Every successful connection can depend on the people who design, maintain, protect and improve the technology behind it.

National IT Professionals Day, observed annually on the month of September, serves as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of IT professionals to the digital world. It also reminds us that technological progress is not driven by machines alone. Behind every innovation are people who use their knowledge and skills to turn ideas into useful solutions.

As society moves toward a more connected future, IT professionals will continue to play an important role in shaping how people live, learn, work and communicate.

This IT Professionals' Day, take a moment to appreciate the people behind the technology we rely on. Thank an IT professional, recognize their work and remember that every click, connection and digital service is made possible by people working behind the screen.

The word journalism comes directly from the French word โ€œjournalismeโ€ which means the practice of daily record keeping. This was rooted in the word journal, which derives from the Latin โ€œdiurnalisโ€, meaning daily. The word appeared around 1781, was used during Frence Revolution, and subsequently made its way into the english language in 1821.

Before newspapers came alive, people read daily news from handwritten notes given by the town informers reading updates aloud in public Plazas. During 1631, the father of French journalism, Thรจophraste Renaudot, introduced the La Gazette, the first official weekly newspaper in France which recorsds regular news reports.

Afterwards, the movable type printing press of Johannes Guttenberg transformed media, that paved the way for Daily Courant in 1703, a widely considered as the worldโ€™s first daily printed newspaper.

News moved from paper to radio, television, and eventually through the use of various online platforms. Yet, even as technology changed the transfer of informations, the main goal of journalism remained the same, and that is to report relevant events as they happen.

Today, anyone with a phone can just easily share information online in an instant. Though this makes sharing news faster, this can also cause misleading information which is why journalists focus on checking facts to ensure that all published information is accurate, based on facts and necessary to readers.

No matter how artificial intelligence and technology change and how we share and communicate, the purpose behind journalism remains more crucial than ever. Journalism will always rely on truth, relevance, ethical reporting and the commitment to keeping the public informed.

There is something unsettling about the timing of illness.

Not illness itself. Not the human vulnerability that comes with a failing heart, unstable blood pressure or a body that suddenly refuses to cooperate. Those deserve compassion, regardless of oneโ€™s wealth, position or political affiliation.

What deserves scrutiny is what happens when illness arrives at the exact moment the law comes knocking.

For years, Martin Romualdez occupied one of the most powerful positions in the country, his name synonymous with political influence, authority and access to the highest corridors of government. Now, he finds himself at the center of a very different question. The former House Speaker was arrested in connection with a โ‚ฑ7.4-billion plunder case involving alleged kickbacks from flood-control projects. Yet when accountability finally reached his doorstep, it did not find him behind a government desk or within the walls of Congress. It found him in a hospital bed, under medical care for reported health complications.

The facts are straightforward. The timing, however, is what makes the public ask questions: When powerful officials face criminal accountability, does illness become the first line of defense?

It is a question that should not be dismissed as cruelty.

A person does not lose the right to medical treatment because he is accused of corruption. Neither should the state use detention as an excuse to disregard legitimate medical needs. Due process does not stop at the hospital door.

But the opposite must also be true. A hospital bed should not become a legal escape hatch.

Romualdezโ€™s case has already demonstrated why the public is skeptical. He was served his arrest warrant while hospitalized and authorities have had to determine whether his medical condition should affect the manner of his detention. The issue is no longer simply whether an accused person is sick. It is whether sickness should determine how justice is experienced by the powerful.

The law may be blind but the circumstances surrounding its enforcement can sometimes look remarkably selective. And this is where the Romualdez controversy should be examined beyond partisan politics.

The question is not whether Romualdez is guilty. That is for the courts to determine. The question is not even whether he is genuinely ill. That is for qualified physicians to establish. The question is whether the countryโ€™s justice system has sufficient safeguards to ensure that medical necessity does not become political privilege.

Filipinos have watched corruption cases drag on for years. They have watched powerful personalities obtain lawyers, bail, medical accommodations and procedural remedies that ordinary citizens can hardly imagine accessing. They have seen political influence turn legal battles into prolonged spectacles.

So when another powerful official becomes seriously ill just as detention approaches, skepticism becomes almost inevitable.

Trust, once depleted, makes even legitimate illness look suspicious. That is the deeper crisis.

Perhaps the most dangerous thing about corruption is not the money stolen nor even the projects left unfinished. It is what happens when those accused of stealing from the public begin to believe that accountability is negotiable.

Romualdezโ€™s case will be decided by the courts not by headlines, outrage or public suspicion. If he is genuinely ill, he must receive treatment. If he is guilty, he must answer for it. But neither illness nor influence should become a private doorway out of a public reckoning.

Because justice loses its meaning when the powerful can afford to postpone it.

A hospital must remain a place for healing not a refuge from accountability. And when the law finally comes knocking, no title, no fortune, no political connection and no convenient diagnosis should be powerful enough to make it wait.

A person is not merely a cup filled with problems nor destined to shatter under their weight. A person is not a fragile flower, doomed to wither because of every passing storm. Nor are they broken pieces of glass, reassembled into a glittering mirrorball and valued only for how beautifully they reflect light for others.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 727,000 people die by su***de every year with many more attempting to take their own lives. Every su***de is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries, leaving lasting effects on those who are left behind.

Su***de is not a fleeting feeling that simply fades away nor is it a simple concept that can be easily understood. There are moments when the pressures of life become overwhelming, when the weight of pain seems to consume every bit of a person's strength and makes them question their own worth. When the burden becomes too heavy to carry and it feels as though no one is willing to listen or understand, the world can become painfully narrow and dark.

It can feel as though gravity itself is pulling a person toward an abyss, leaving them suspended in hopelessness, unable to see a way out.

This September 10, 2026, as we observe World Su***de Prevention Day, we are reminded to acknowledge the struggles and vulnerabilities that are part of being human. We honor the courage of those who continue to fight, even when they are falling apart piece by piece, simply trying to survive another day.

We extend our deepest respect and compassion to every person who keeps moving forward, however slowly, searching for even the smallest glimpse of light in a world that can sometimes feel unbearably cruel.

May we learn to listen without judgment, to offer support without conditions and to be the gentle hand that reminds someone that they are not alone. Sometimes, what a hurting person needs most is not an answer but someone willing to stay, listen and help them find their way back to hope, to dignity and to the person they truly are.

โ€œOnce you learn to read, you will be forever free.โ€ โ€” Frederick Douglass

Every September 8, we celebrate National Literacy Day, a reminder of the importance of reading, writing, learning and sharing knowledge.

Literacy is more than simply knowing how to read and write. It gives people the confidence to understand the world, express their thoughts, make informed decisions and create better opportunities for themselves and others.

A single book can open a new world. A single lesson can change a life. And a single person who chooses to teach can inspire someone else to keep learning.

This National Literacy Day, let us continue to read, learn and share knowledge. Every word we understand, every page we turn and every lesson we share can bring us closer to a more educated and empowered community.

Let every page be a step toward a brighter future.
