POLAND WARNS OF POSSIBLE RUSSIAN DRONE AND MISSILE ATTACKS

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Russia could potentially use drones and missiles against European countries supporting Ukraine.

Tusk told lawmakers that Polish intelligence assessments indicate a possible Russian strategy involving what he described as "hybrid strikes" against countries supporting Kyiv, including Poland.

The warning comes after a series of Russian attacks on Ukraine and incidents involving drones close to NATO territory.

Tusk is also travelling to Kyiv, where discussions are expected to focus on Ukraine's defence, regional security and possible additional measures against Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported casualties from renewed Russian missile and drone attacks around Kyiv. Ukraine has also carried out strikes against targets inside Russia.

Polish officials have not said that an attack on Poland is imminent. The warning reflects concerns about the possibility of the Ukraine conflict creating wider security incidents involving NATO members.

US ALLOWS IRANIAN DELEGATION TO ATTEND UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The United States has allowed an Iranian delegation to attend next week's United Nations General Assembly, with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian expected to be part of the delegation.

The decision comes while the United States and Iran remain involved in a major military conflict, making the Iranian president's expected appearance at the UN particularly significant.

World leaders will gather in New York beginning next week for the opening of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The Iran conflict is expected to dominate discussions alongside the war in Ukraine, the Israel-Palestinian conflict, Sudan's humanitarian crisis, climate change and the international regulation of artificial intelligence.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly, although diplomatic arrangements surrounding the Iranian delegation have been closely watched.

US AND CHINA FACE A GROWING BATTLE OVER THE FUTURE OF AI

Artificial intelligence is becoming another major area of competition between the United States and China, with both countries developing powerful AI systems while disagreeing over how the technology should be governed.

Experts and policymakers are increasingly calling for international cooperation on AI safety, but deep strategic distrust between Washington and Beijing makes cooperation difficult.

The two countries are pursuing different approaches. US companies remain heavily focused on advanced AI infrastructure and cutting-edge chips, while China has promoted lower-cost and open-source AI models.

One of the biggest questions is how governments can establish international safety standards without allowing regulations to become another source of technological competition.

The issue is expected to receive greater attention at international forums, particularly as governments attempt to address the rapid development of increasingly capable AI systems.

The debate is no longer simply about which country has the most advanced technology — it is also about who sets the rules for AI's future.

USSIA AND CHINA VETO US-BACKED IRAN RESOLUTION AT UN

Russia and China have vetoed a US-backed proposal at the UN Security Council concerning Iran, blocking the measure from moving forward.

The vote comes as the war involving Iran remains one of the central international crises heading into next week's UN General Assembly.

Iran's UN mission welcomed the veto, saying Russia and China had prevented what it described as an attempt by the United States and its allies to use the Security Council against Tehran.

The vote highlights the continuing divisions among the five permanent members of the Security Council — the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom — which each possess veto power.

The issue is expected to remain a major topic when world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly next week.

US APPROVES SALE OF 48 F-35 FIGHTER JETS TO SAUDI ARABIA

The United States has approved a major proposed arms sale to Saudi Arabia involving 48 F-35 fighter jets, according to reports citing US officials.

The decision comes as tensions across the Middle East remain high, with the conflict involving Iran and the continuing Saudi-Houthi confrontation adding to regional security concerns.

Saudi Arabia has sought the advanced aircraft for years. The F-35 is one of the world's most sophisticated fighter aircraft, designed for advanced air combat and precision missions.

The proposed sale is also attracting attention because Israel is currently the only Middle Eastern country operating the F-35, and Israeli officials have previously expressed concerns about maintaining their military advantage in the region.

The development could significantly change the military balance in the Gulf if the sale proceeds.

AIR DEFENCES LIGHT UP THE SKY OVER SAUDI ARABIA AS HOUTHI ATTACKS ESCALATE

Saudi air-defence systems engaging incoming aerial threats as tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement escalate.

The latest wave of attacks has put several areas of Saudi Arabia on heightened alert, including Jeddah, Mecca and Taif. Saudi authorities have also reported intercepting Houthi drones before they could enter restricted airspace.

The escalation follows a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory. The Houthis have claimed attacks against Saudi military facilities, including King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, saying the strikes were carried out in response to Saudi air operations in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed all of the damage claimed by the Houthis.

On September 15, Saudi air defences also intercepted a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the city’s restricted airspace, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The Houthis have denied targeting Mecca or other Islamic holy sites.

CLIMATE CHANGE LINKED TO DEADLY NEPAL GLACIER COLLAPSE

A new scientific analysis has found that human-caused climate change played a significant role in increasing the risk of a deadly slope collapse in Nepal's Himalayas.

The disaster occurred on August 26, sending ice, rock and debris through the Trishuli River corridor.

More than 1,300 people were killed and more than 5,000 remained missing, according to the Associated Press report on the new analysis.

Researchers from the World Weather Attribution group examined how rising temperatures affected the Himalayan environment.

The analysis found that warming temperatures have contributed to glacier retreat and the thawing of permafrost permanently frozen ground that can help stabilize mountain slopes.

The researchers said climate change increased the instability of the terrain, although other factors, including the region's geological history and the effects of the 2015 earthquake, also played a role.

The findings provide another example of how changes in the world's climate can interact with existing natural hazards.

HYROX BEIJING CONTROVERSY: ATHLETE WINS DESPITE MID-RACE BOWEL INCIDENT

Australian HYROX athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has become the centre of an international sports controversy after experiencing sudden bowel incontinence during a HYROX race in Beijing yet continuing to compete and ultimately winning the event.

Wietrzyk was competing in the Women’s Pro race on September 12 when she suffered the medical incident during the demanding indoor fitness competition. Despite the incident, she continued through the remaining stations and finished the race.

Videos and photographs from the event later spread widely online, showing Wietrzyk continuing to use shared areas and equipment while visibly affected by the incident.

That quickly shifted the conversation from athletic endurance to health, hygiene and event safety.

Critics questioned why race officials did not immediately remove the athlete from the competition, particularly because HYROX events involve competitors sharing equipment and surfaces, including rowing machines, mats and other fitness stations.
