Standing in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Light Station Tubbataha
remains a symbol of the Philippine Coast Guard's commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection. Amid thousands of nesting seabirds and the pristine beauty of Tubbataha Reefs, the lighthouse continues to guide mariners safely through the Sulu Sea while coexisting with one of the world's richest marine ecosystems.
The Tubbataha Reefs light is one of the lighthouses built during the American Era.
The station was established in 1915, but the original lighthouse was erected only in 1938. In 1980, the Philippine Coast Guard replaced the original wooden skeletal tower with a more durable reinforced concrete lighthouse.
As part of the Philippine Coast Guard's continuing modernization of the country's
Aids to Navigation (ATON) system, LS Tubbataha underwent another major upgrade in 2019. The improvements included the construction of a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) lighthouse tower, installation of an energy-efficient LED marine lantern, solar-powered electrical system and an updated light characteristic of Flashing White Light every Five (5) Seconds (Fl (2) W 5s).
More than an aid to navigation, LS Tubbataha represents resilience, service, and
the enduring mission of the Philippine Coast Guard to protect lives at sea and preserve the nation's natural heritage.
