Classical Swine Fever (CSF), also known as Hog Cholera, is one of the most contagious viral diseases affecting domestic pigs and wild boar. Classical Swine Fever is caused by the Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV), a Pestivirus belonging to the Flaviviridae family. The virus attacks the pig's immune system and blood vessels, leading to widespread hemorrhages and organ damage.
π¬ Pathogenesis (How the Disease Develops)
After entering the pig through the mouth, nose, or eyes, the virus first multiplies in the tonsils and nearby lymphoid tissues. It then enters the bloodstream (viremia) and spreads throughout the body.
The virus targets:
- Lymph nodes
- Spleen
- Bone marrow
- Kidneys
- Liver
- Lungs
- Intestinal tissues
As the infection progresses:
- Blood vessel walls become damaged, causing widespread bleeding.

Acute Disease

- Depression and weakness
- Reluctance to move
- Red or purple discoloration of the ears, abdomen, and legs
- Red eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Constipation followed by severe diarrhea
- Vomiting (occasionally)
- Difficulty walking
- Staggering gait
- Tremors
- Convulsions
- Skin hemorrhages
- Sudden deaths
Mortality can reach 90β100% in severe outbreaks.
Chronic Disease
Less severe infections may cause:
- Intermittent fever

Infection in Pregnant Sows

Because Classical Swine Fever closely resembles African Swine Fever (ASF), laboratory confirmation is essential.

Never rely on clinical signs alone to distinguish CSF from ASF.

Unfortunately, there is no specific cure for Classical Swine Fever.
Supportive treatment may include:

- Broad-spectrum antibiotics to control secondary bacterial infections (these do not kill the virus)
In many countries, infected pigs are humanely culled to stop the disease from spreading.
