Outdoor classrooms are the best venues to conduct outdoor trainings and it brings out the best in you.

Expecting a rainy weather during last weekends class, we set up a tarp shelter for the entire class (a group of 25 people). In order to do this, I used a 30-ft tubular webbing rope... anchored it to a tree and erected a pole on the other end securing it with a clove hitch, and finally tensioning the entire line with a trucker's hitch, a 3:1 mechanical advantage ensuring a solid and sturdy ridgeline that is going to hold two nylon tarps. It did poured rain really hard during the 1st day of training and the shelter held up as it should.

It’s World Snake Day, a time to recognize one of Earth’s most misunderstood creatures.

Snakes have been portrayed as villains, dangerous, and even as a symbol for deception. But no matter how tainted snake reputation has become, there is no denying that science provides a different information that common norms.

🐍 Snakes control rodent and other snake populations, keeping ecosystems balanced.
🌿 Some snakes are indicators of a healthy environment.
💉 And their venom? It’s helping develop life-saving medications.

Snakes are resilient creatures that have adapted to live in deserts, seas, forests, and urban areas. This is seen in their graceful coils in the jungle and their mesmerizing movements. They have been revered, feared, adored, and researched. Above all, however, they are essential creatures of this planet.

So today as we celebrate World snake day, don’t just flinch at the thought of a snake. Learn something. Share a fact. Appreciate the wild beauty of a creature built not for cuddles but for wonder.

Intro to Outdoors: Hike, Camp & Learn 🥾🏕️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Exactly 6 years ago we did our 3rd batch of the Intro to Outdoors class, hiking fully loaded & overnight camping at a secluded campsite in Baksan Sapangdaku Cebu.

I am hosting another batch this coming July 26-27, 2025 at the same route and venue. We will be hiking for a 6-8km distance with our fill loaded packs, identifying plant species along the way and we will spend the night at Camp NT (Native Trees) and observe the different varieties of birds and animals that you rarely see these days in the Cities.

Pouched coral fern | Agsam. A wild fern that can be utilized as a ready-for-use cordage. Just remove the leaves and you have yourself a super strong lashing material. Perfect for weaving and basketry bushcraft projects. Another unique feature that this plant has is the hexagonal shape or pattern of its stem as it grows.
