: House Senior Deputy Minority Leader Leila de Lima on Monday, May 18, called for the passage of a bill expanding cash benefits for senior citizens by including Filipinos aged 70 to 75 among recipients.
House Bill No. 9170 seeks to amend the expanded Centenarians Act by granting ₱25,000 to Filipinos at age 70, ₱50,000 at 80, and ₱75,000 at 90, with additional ₱10,000 cash gifts at ages 75, 85, and 95. Existing law grants ₱10,000 cash gifts to Filipinos reaching ages 80, 85, 90, and 95, while centenarians receive ₱100,000 from the government.
De Lima cited data from the Philippine Institute For Development Studies and the World Bank showing Filipino life expectancy averages around 70 to 71 years, while the World Health Organization estimated average life expectancy in the Philippines at 66.4 years in 2021.
“Our senior citizens are already at the stage of their life where care and comfort matter most. Huwag na nating ipagdamot o ipagkait ang mga benepisyong kaya nang ipagkaloob ng estado sa kanila bilang pagpapahalaga at pasasalamat sa kanilang kontribusyon sa ating lipunan," the lawmaker said.
