CEBU BECOMES A SUDDEN WATER PARK

On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Metro Cebu morphed into what could only be described as an accidental water park, thanks to tropical depression Crising and the relentless southwest monsoon. What began as a light drizzle quickly escalated into a full-blown flood, turning bustling streets into wild rivers. Major thoroughfares connecting Cebu City to Mandaue and Talisay vanished under waves of knee- to waist-deep water, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in what seemed like a scene straight out of a disaster movie.

With public transport at a standstill, drenched workers, students, and residents waded through murky waters or scrambled for any form of shelter, all while desperately trying to escape this unexpected deluge. The usual buzz of the streets faded into an eerie silence, punctuated only by the sounds of rushing water and the occasional honk from frustrated motorists.

But the chaos didn't end there. Nineteen flooding incidents and three landslides were reported, rendering 17 roads and one key bridge impassable. Amidst all this, questions are swirling about the billions allocated for drainage and flood mitigation programs—where did all that money go? As the floodwaters poured in, it’s hard not to shout, “What a day to forget your umbrella!” Metro Cebu might have been caught off guard, but the resilience of its people turned this aquatic adventure into a testament of survival.
