Sam Rowley spent a week lying flat on subway platforms with his camera, drawing strange looks from commuters. One drunk person even jumped on him thinking he was having a heart attack.

But he got the shot.

Two mice, fighting over a crumb in the split second before one scurried away. The moment lasted barely a quarter of a second.

The photo, titled Station Squabble, won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year LUMIX People's Choice Award from London's Natural History Museum. It beat out 48,000 other submissions and received 28,000 votes.

The photo reminds us that wildlife doesn't just exist in remote jungles or national parks. It's right there on your commute, in the spaces we walk past every day without noticing.

October was literally earth-shaking for Filipinos, opening with a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu. Still reeling from the impact of consecutive storms and flooding, Filipinos once again face natural disasters claiming lives and properties.

In the wake of these calamities, we are reminded of the importance of preparedness and of having a reliable government to help ease our inherent vulnerability as a disaster-prone country.
