CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES โ The University of Cebu (UC) is taking a major leap forward in maritime education with a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony with South Korea's Pukyong National University (PKNU). The ceremony, held at the UC-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC), seals a partnership that is a major component of PKNU's Regional Innovation System & Education (RISE) project, a major initiative designed to connect universities with local industries to drive innovation and economic development.
This signed agreement establishes a long-term partnership focused on academic collaboration, research, and exchange programs, which is poised to elevate the global competitiveness of UC's maritime graduates.
The partnership's main objective is to foster cooperation through joint research, student and faculty exchanges, internship opportunities, and the co-development of academic curricula. The MOU signing signifies an agreement from both universities to share knowledge and resources, ensuring that students are prepared for the evolving demands of the global maritime industry.
Known figures from the University of Cebu are in attendance, including Atty. Manuel Elijah Sarausad, Executive Vice Chancellor, Capt. Gerry D. Enjambre, OIC-Campus Director of UC-METC, C/M Guillermo Diluvio, Assistant OIC Campus Director, Engr. Maria Jean Berdin, OIC-Chairperson of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) Department, and Ms. Merliza Tayros, Chairperson-General Education, alongside the entire NAME Department.
Among those present are PKNU's Chief of Research Support Division, Kim Chan Jung and Vice President Ha Myung Shin. Also participating in the event are key leaders from PKNU's network of industry partners, accentuating the strong tie between academia and industry in this collaboration. The presidents and CEOs of various companies, including Lee Jung Hwan of KOSEC/ BUEA, Ko Dung Han of HANA TECH, Kim Kyeon B**g of KOREA SHIP ENGINEERING SERVICES CO., LTD, Gam Lee Sang of G-TECH CO., LTD Lee Young Hun of YTTTECH, Lee Jae Ik of TRANS GAS SOLUTION, Park Hyoung Kyu of Kosmo, and Nam-gu District in Busan City Mayor Oh Eun Taek, together with major research institutions and companies in Busan such as Research Institute of Medium & Small, Kostec, and Dongyan Engineering Co., LTD, are present as well to witness the signing, emphasizing the real-world impact of this academic alliance.
UC's NAME department has consistently been a top producer of licensed naval architects in the Philippines, with its graduates frequently securing top spots in national board exams. This new international linkage with PKNU strengthens the department's reputation and provides its students with an even wider platform for academic and professional growth.
The collaboration is another badge to recognize UC's dedication to providing a world-class education that extends beyond national borders.
