CEBU, Philippines — Eight local government units in the Province of Cebu are now considered drug-cleared.
The first LGU that was declared as drug-cleared was Bogo City after its 29 barangays were cleared by the oversight committee last year.
This was followed by Pilar town after its 13 barangays were all declared as drug-cleared by the committee early this year.
Yesterday, the oversight committee headed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-7) met again for the deliberation of the endorsed barangays and 59 were declared as drug-cleared.
Ivy Durano – Meca, head of the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO) said, one of the barangays is in Sogod town, 18 in Borbon, nine in Alegria, two in Samboan, four in San Francisco, one in the City of Naga, four in Oslob, 16 in Tabogon, three in Medellin, and one in San Remigio.
With the latest development, Meca said, the towns in the Camotes Group of Islands namely Poro, which has 17 barangays; Tudela which has 11; and San Francisco which has 15 barangays, are now drug-cleared.
The towns of Alegria, which has nine barangays and San Remigio which has 27, are also among the drug-cleared LGUs.
At present, the total number of drug-cleared barangays in the province is 244.
The oversight committee first declared 185 barangays last year and additional 59 barangays yesterday.
With the number of barangays cleared by oversight committee, Cebu Province has met one of the requirements of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to achieve the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) award.
Base on the criteria set by DILG, at least 20 percent of the total barangays of a provincial government should be cleared from drugs.
Cebu Province has 1,066 barangays which means it has to clear at least 213 barangays to meet the DILG requirement. — MBG (FREEMAN)
