SWU PHINMA WRAPS BRIGADA ‘26 OUTREACH AT SDIS, EYES MOUNTAIN BARANGAYS FOR 2027

Driven by a decade-long commitment to community service, Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA concluded its four-day Brigada Eskwela 2026 outreach at Sudlon Dos Integrated School, marking its fifth consecutive year in helping the Sudlon community.

The outreach offered dental check-ups, alongside its assistance in cleaning school facilities, repainting of classrooms, and textbook enhancements.

In an interview with The Quill, Pamela Goya, one of the parents from Sudlon, shared her joy over the school’s improvements ahead of the upcoming academic year.

“[Na] lipay kay among anak mo klase, limpyo ang eskwelahan, nindot tan-awon ang palibot kay nindot sad gyud [na makita] na naay improvement diri na kada abli sa klase [kay] nindot ang palibot nya pinturahan,” she stated.

Moving forward, Community Development Coordinator Cyril Bughao shared plans to focus on mountainous areas in Cebu for SWU PHINMA’s Brigada Eskwela 2027 outreach.

He also proposed making medical missions a continuing part of the initiative, in collaboration with the College of Dentistry, College of Optometry, College of Nursing, and the Emergency Action Squad, with plans in place to partner with the College of Pharmacy to ensure easy access to medicine.

Today marks the 54th World Environment Day!

This year’s theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” serves as a reminder that climate action can no longer wait as record-breaking temperatures and disappearing glaciers continue to reshape our world.

In the Philippines, global climate commitments are being translated into concrete local action. The Climate Change Commission is helping communities prepare for rising heat through localized adaptation programs, while cities such as Cebu are expanding solar power installations in government facilities to strengthen clean energy use. Meanwhile, the DENR continues to promote forest conservation and restoration through new carbon credit frameworks that encourage long-term environmental protection.

These initiatives demonstrate that climate action is not just confined to global discussions, it is taking shape in our cities, communities, and ecosystems.

Every restored forest, solar-powered facility, and climate-resilient community moves us one step closer to a sustainable future for generations to come.

SWU PHINMA RETURNS TO RMIS FOR BRIGADA ’26, CUTTING OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS FOR TEACHERS

In preparation for the upcoming academic year, Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA has mobilized its volunteers to support Regino Mercado Integrated School (RMIS), marking a decade of continuous partnership under the Brigada Eskwela program.

Community Development Engagement Coordinator Cyril Bughao noted that this year’s participation stands out from previous efforts due to the expanded deployment of medical, triage, and dental teams, which have now been integrated into the initiative for three consecutive years.

In an interview with The Quill, Rutchel Doble, a Grade 6 teacher at RMIS, highlighted the impact of being SWU PHINMA’s annual beneficiary, emphasizing how the partnership eases the financial strain on the school's faculty.

"We're very blessed g'yud kay yearly gyud ang Southwestern [University] PHINMA nga naa mo tabang namo. Unya greatful kaayo mi sa tanan kay aside sa financial burden namo as teachers, bisag mo ingon sila ug di mo gasto, maka gasto g'yud mi, pero sa [SWU] PHINMA maluwas-luwas g'yud ta," she shared.

With the formal opening of classes set for June 8, the university's outreach initiative will continue tomorrow, June 5, at Sudlon Dos Integrated School, marking the final day of this year's Brigada Eskwela campaign.

SALIN NG LAHI.
Sa bawat hampas ng bakal,
at tilamsik ng apoy,
nakikita ko ang sarili.

Ang dugong nananalaytay sa iyong bisig,
ay siyang nagpapatibay sa aking mga kamay.

Dahil, Ama—
ako’y ikaw, at ika’y ako.

PRIDE BEYOND COLORS

Pride Month serves as more than a celebration of identity, it is a reminder of the continuing call for equality and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ community.

In the Philippines, where conversations on discrimination, representation, and the passage of inclusive policies remain ongoing, this observance highlights the importance of creating spaces where individuals can live authentically without fear of prejudice or exclusion.

Beyond the colorful celebrations, it stands as a reflection of society's responsibility to uphold respect, human rights, and inclusivity for all.
