HARD STARBOARD… CANCELLED! THEN HARD PORT — WAS THIS THE RIGHT DECISION?

A vessel underway was approaching an anchored vessel in a lake. The initial helm order was “Hard Starboard,” but the Captain subsequently cancelled the order and ordered “Hard Port.” The vessel then swung and allided with the bow of the anchored vessel, resulting in a serious collision incident.

This raises an important question for every mariner: Was the change of helm order the right decision, or should the original maneuver have been maintained? 🤔

Situations like this show why early assessment, clear communication, proper bridge teamwork, and timely positive action are so critical. Once a vessel is in a close-quarters situation, every second—and every helm command—can make a huge difference.
