Cebu in a Bite Celebrates Island's Culinary Heritage Through Local Food Entrepreneurs

Cebu Business Month 2025 amplifies homegrown brands to reach wider audiences

Cebu in a Bite successfully elevated Cebu's emerging food businesses, providing crucial exposure and networking opportunities for local entrepreneurs. The signature event, part of Cebu Business Month (CBM) 2025 organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), demonstrated the island's commitment to nurturing its vibrant food ecosystem.

Strategically held alongside BAICON 2025, the Philippines' premier content creator conference, the event attracted food enthusiasts, digital influencers, and industry professionals, creating unprecedented opportunities for local vendors to amplify their brand reach.

CBM Cebu in a Bite Champion Carlo Olano highlighted the event's diverse representation of Cebu's food culture, featuring 25 to 30 local establishments. The lineup spanned traditional Cebuano favorites like ngoyong, tuslob-buwa, and inasal, alongside innovative offerings such as Bosang and Croffles.

"We wanted to present the full spectrum of Cebu's culinary identity under one roof," Olano explained. "The result was an exceptional blend of heritage flavors, culinary innovation, and accessible pricing that truly represents our food scene."

The strategic partnership with BAICON proved particularly valuable, enabling participating businesses to leverage influencer marketing and tap into broader digital audiences. "This collaboration created the perfect storm for local brand amplification," Olano noted. "Content creators became organic ambassadors for these homegrown establishments."

The CBM 2025 PADAYON CEBU's Cebu in a Bite showcased an impressive roster of local businesses, including Jerbie's Kandingan, Wella's Barbecue Sa Larsian, Croffles, Chef Pablo, LK Bakery, Flix and Chill, Balamban Liempo, Casa Verde, Cluck Sarap, Unlisted Burger, Don Lemon, Lechon Co, and Baka Na Pud.

Crowd favorites emerged across categories, with LK Bakery's croissant ice cream and Croffles' innovative waffle creations drawing significant attention. Traditional offerings remained strong performers, with pork barbecue, pochero, roasted beef, balbacua, and various grilled meats and seafood attracting substantial patronage.

Chef Pablo embodies the entrepreneurial spirit that Cebu in a Bite aims to celebrate. Founded by culinary graduate Dayne Mejorado Fernandez at age 19, the fried chicken business evolved from a modest rolling cart operation into a thriving enterprise with 32 branches across Cebu, plus expansion into Bohol and Southern Leyte.

"Our menu focuses on quality homemade offerings like fried chicken, whole chicken, chicken skin, and proven," Fernandez explained. "While we're actively pursuing franchise opportunities and system innovations, we remain grounded in our humble origins."

Fernandez candidly shared the challenges behind the success: "The journey included multiple setbacks and failures, but persistence and commitment to quality kept us moving forward."

Unlisted Burger's story exemplifies successful career pivoting in pursuit of entrepreneurial passion. Owner Jhon Pescador, originally pursuing aircraft maintenance, discovered his calling in food service during college, driven by a vision to deliver affordable, premium-quality burgers.
"Our path included numerous failures and learning experiences," Pescador reflected. "The key was refusing to surrender to setbacks." Today, Unlisted Burger operates seven locations, including prominent spots in JCentre Mall, North Park Building, and General Maxilom Avenue. Their competitive advantage lies in their artisanal approach, crafting both hamburger buns and patties in-house.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival graced the ribbon-cutting ceremony and expressed strong support for establishing Cebu in a Bite as an annual tradition, with aspirations for expanded scale in future iterations.

The inaugural event positively accomplished its dual mission of celebrating Cebu's rich food heritage while providing a launchpad for local food entrepreneurs. By creating connections between traditional flavors and modern business opportunities, Cebu in a Bite reinforced Cebu's position as a dynamic culinary destination where heritage and innovation converge.

CTHA 2025 Honors Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality

Cebu raises the bar in tourism and hospitality through the 4th Cebu Tourism and Hospitality Awards (CTHA), a program that honors outstanding individuals who embody service, professionalism, and excellence. The CTHA 2025 will be held on August 13, 2025 at the Ayala Center Cebu.

“We envisioned the CTHA to be a platform to highlight the high-caliber people we have—those who are passionate and dedicated to delivering true Cebuano hospitality to the world,” said Mia Singson-Leon, President of the Hotel, Resort, and Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC) and General Manager of Quest Hotel. “To be a world-class MICE destination, we must offer not just beautiful venues but excellent service driven by a heart for hospitality.”

The annual awards shine a light on the unsung heroes of Cebu’s tourism and hospitality sector. CTHA honors rank-and-file staff, supervisors, managers, and educators who go above and beyond in their work.

CTHA Chairman and Seda Central Bloc Cebu General Manager Ron Manalang shared, “By honoring these individuals, we inspire others to follow a path of excellence. We want to show the country and the world how good our people truly are when it comes to hospitality.”

A panel of respected judges from different industries interviews each nominee. One key question asked of them is what innovations they or their properties introduced—whether in sustainability, marketing, or guest relations—to improve service.

Manalang emphasized that the awards do more than recognize past performance. “We’ve kept in touch with our awardees, and we see that they continue to grow in their careers. It affirms that we made the right choices, and it gives us confidence that the program will only get stronger.”

Cebu in a Bite: A Tasting Tour of Cebu’s Culinary Identity

Cebu’s culinary heritage takes center stage this July through CEBU IN A BITE, a food festival that offers more than just a feast for the senses. The event brings together timeless flavors and emerging food trends in one historic venue.

Happening at Plaza Independencia, Cebu City on July 18 (3 PM to 10 PM) and July 19 (9 AM to 11 PM), the festival carries the theme “Savor the Heritage of Cebu in Every Bite.” It is one of the events of Cebu Business Month (CBM) 2025 that highlights the vibrant street food scene of Cebu. It also offers an opportunity to savor a diverse range of local flavors — from traditional favorites to innovative fusion dishes that reflect the creativity of a new generation.

Carlo Olano, one of the Champions for this year's CBM 2025 Cebu In A Bite and the passionate advocate behind Kalami Cebu, expressed his excitement, recalling a powerful question that continues to resonate: “What if we could gather the best flavors of Cebu in one iconic place?”

That shared vision helped ignite what would become Cebu in A Bite, which began its flavorful journey in 2024 at Vibo Place, gathering around 40 food merchants united by one goal: to showcase the rich, diverse and delicious culinary heritage of Cebu. What started as a simple idea quickly evolved into a dynamic community of local food makers, from homegrown delicacies to street foods.

Olano added "We wanted to highlight not just the ‘famous’ dishes,” Olano explained, “but also the gems you find in kanto carinderias, the underrated dishes our lolos and lolas love, and even the 39-peso lemonade stands and DIY tuslob buwa kits that young Cebuanos enjoy today.”

Cebu in a Bite embraces both the nostalgic and the new. Among the must-try dishes are kaldereta, balbacua, Larsian-style BBQ, lechon, ngohiong, and an array of baked goods, pastries, and locally reimagined classics.

“Cebu’s food scene is a vibrant mix of history, migration, creativity, and resilience,” said Olano. “What makes Cebu unique is that we can be both street-smart and world-class, and our flavors tell that story.”

Held in a historic spot, the festival turns every bite into a taste of Cebu’s culture and memories. It’s more than just a food fair—it’s a delicious way to relive Cebuano life.

This year’s event is held alongside BAICON 2025, the country’s largest gathering of creators and communities, driven to elevate the country's digital entertainment industry. The timing is intentional.

“It’s a match made in marketing heaven,” Olano said. “Imagine Cebu’s best street food being enjoyed and shared online by top influencers in real time. That’s organic promotion most MSMEs can only dream of.”

Beyond visibility, the partnership provides opportunities. Through Cebu in a Bite, small businesses and food vendors gain a platform not just to sell, but to connect — with influencers, investors, and potential partners.

“CBM’s support for MSMEs goes beyond booths,” Olano emphasized. “It’s about giving them the stage they deserve — to be seen, to be tasted, and to be remembered.”

Every dish at Cebu in a Bite has a tale to tell—about the people, the place, and the culture. It’s a culinary journey that celebrates Cebu’s identity—one dish, one story, one bite at a time.

The CBM 2025 PADAYON CEBU’s Cebu In A Bite merchants include Jerbie's Kandingan, Wella's Barbecue Sa Larsian, Croffles, Chef Pablo, Lk Bakery, 8Flix And Chill, Balamban Liempo, Casa Verde, Cluck Sarap, Unlisted Burger, Don Lemon, Lechon Co, And Baka Na Pud.

The VIBO PLACE Cebu In A Bite Merchants are Boy Palamig, Barbie's Lechon, Señora Sisig Bar, 4dables Food House, Ho Ngohiong Cebu, Potato Mama, Penggoy, Rae’s Sizzling Hub, Chosen Buns, Choo-Ee Won Coin Pancake, Hinam Cebu & Cooldapya, and Bao Bao’s Xiao Long Bao.

BAICON Merchants include Strange Matcha, Tony's Pizza, Arte Artsy, Onlypans, And Ukay Ta Bai.

Taiwan Travel Craze Sweeps the Philippines: Million-Follower Influencers Rally Fans to Visit Taiwan Visa-Free!

Now is the perfect time to explore Taiwan! The visa-free entry policy for Filipino tourists has been extended until July 31, 2026, making it even easier to visit. To actively promote Taiwan in the Philippine market, the Taiwan Tourism Administration has formed a 50-member "Taiwan Tourism Delegation," comprising 25 units including the Taichung City Government, various travel agencies, airlines, hotels, theme parks, and souvenir brands. This delegation will participate in the 2025 Travel Madness Expo (TME) in the Philippines from July 11 to 13.

The Taiwan Pavilion (Booth No. 58–64), themed "Taiwan – Waves of Wonder" under the Tourism Brand 3.0 concept, uses vibrant colors and playful, stacked blocks to highlight the island's seasonal beauty and attract attention. A stunning photo wall will showcase iconic destinations like Taipei 101, Rainbow Village in Taichung, the Taitung International Balloon Festival, and Zhaori Hot Spring in Green Island, emphasizing Taiwan's diverse tourism offerings.

Visitors to the Taiwan Pavilion will have a truly immersive experience. Top Filipino influencers Carl Chuidian ("The Chui Show" with 1.54 million followers) and Mommy Haidee (renowned travel vlogger) will share their incredible travel experiences, must-try Taiwanese food, and top attractions. The pavilion will also feature dynamic performances by T-pop street dance world champions, and for the first time in the Philippines, offer classic Taiwanese summer treats like refreshing lemon winter melon tea, hand-washed Alishan aiyu jelly, and traditional wheel cakes. Guests can also enjoy a DIY wooden train workshop. These cultural and culinary experiences are designed to deepen Filipinos' desire to visit Taiwan. As an added incentive, visitors who purchase Taiwan-bound flight tickets or travel packages worth at least PHP 20,000 at TME will be eligible to enter a raffle for a round-trip ticket between Manila and Taipei!

Taiwan has rapidly become a favorite for Filipino travelers. In 2024, the number of visitors from the Philippines reached 467,000, making it the top Southeast Asian source market and Taiwan's sixth-largest global source market. This strong growth continues into 2025, with over 146,581 Filipino tourists visiting Taiwan from January to March, a year-on-year increase of more than 25.38%.
Taiwan's tourism environment has also garnered international recognition.

In 2024, seven destinations and two green enterprises in Taiwan were listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories, a record-setting achievement for sustainable tourism. Agoda ranked Taipei and Kaohsiung among Asia’s most popular one-night stay destinations (third and eighth, respectively). Additionally, UK-based cultural magazine Time Out named Taipei the world’s safest city for female digital nomads and rated it "Excellent" for foreign visitor friendliness.

To further boost tourism from the Philippines, Taiwan will not only participate in the TME but will also host Taiwan Tourism Promotion Events in Iloilo on July 15 and in Cebu on July 16. These events aim to expand business opportunities and inbound tourism, with over 100 Filipino travel industry professionals, airline representatives, and major media expected to attend. These initiatives will showcase Taiwan’s newest attractions and promotional offers, further strengthening tourism exchange and maintaining the momentum of Filipino tourism to Taiwan.PR

Aventus Medical Care Offers Timely, Accessible Animal Bite Care Services

Aventus Medical Care, Inc. is making critical rabies treatment more accessible through its expanded Animal Bite Care services, now available in all its clinics and via Home Health service. This initiative addresses the urgent need for prompt and proper treatment following animal bites or exposures (excluding snakebites), especially as the Philippines continues to record hundreds of rabies-related deaths each year.

In 2024 alone, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 426 fatal rabies cases. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it is entirely preventable with early medical intervention.

“We treat patients with a history of scratches, bites, or even licked open wounds. Rabies exposure isn’t limited to obvious injuries,” said Dr. Donabel Pineda, Medical Director of Aventus. “Our goal is to ensure that individuals receive the necessary care immediately.”

Comprehensive Treatment Package

The Aventus Animal Bite Care package includes the anti-rabies vaccine, Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) administered depending on the category of exposure, and tetanus shots depending on the patient’s vaccination history. The treatments follow the DOH’s recommended schedule and are available even for minor injuries or potential exposures.

Patients can avail themselves of the service at any Aventus clinic without the need for an appointment. For those unable to visit a clinic, the service is also offered through the Aventus Home Health Service to ensure treatment is within reach. This allows greater flexibility, especially for families with young children or for individuals in remote areas.

Promoting Awareness

Beyond clinical care, Aventus is also helping raise public awareness on rabies prevention. Earlier this year, the company conducted an internal rabies awareness webinar for employees of Aventus, Intellicare, and Avega. A public session is being planned to further educate communities.

According to Dr. Pineda, misconceptions about rabies treatment have decreased in recent years due to increased awareness about the fatal consequences of rabies. “Most patients who come to us already understand the dangers of rabies and the importance of seeking treatment early,” she said.

Coverage and Expansion

The Animal Bite Care services are covered by most Aventus-accredited HMOs, including Intellicare and Avega. Coverage depends on the patient’s individual plan. While installment options are not yet available, Aventus is working toward establishing PhilHealth-accredited Animal Bite Centers to expand access to more Filipinos.

By offering comprehensive treatment, ensuring ease of access, and educating the public, Aventus is taking a proactive role in preventing rabies—a disease that continues to claim lives despite being entirely preventable.
