EABC 2026 Chair pushes “ecosystem” strategy to position RP for investment shifts

The continuing tensions in the Middle East may be disrupting global trade and investment flows, but for East Asia Business Council 2026 Chair Jay Yuvallos, the uncertainty is also creating new opportunities for Southeast Asia — particularly for the Philippines.

Speaking about the evolving global economic landscape, Yuvallos said periods of disruption often force investors to seek new markets, new supply chains, and safer long-term bases for expansion.

“If there is disruption, there is also opportunity,” Yuvallos said. “The conflict changes the flow of capital and investments. Investors are now looking into other markets, and the Philippines has always been one of them.”

While economic powerhouses such as China, Japan, and South Korea continue to dominate East Asia, Yuvallos noted that international investors are increasingly turning their attention toward Southeast Asia.

Countries like Singapore and Vietnam have emerged as strong investment magnets in recent years, but he believes the Philippines remains an “undervalued” market with significant upside potential.

“The Philippines has always been undervalued,” he said. “There are many opportunities here, pockets of opportunities, and if invested in properly, the upside is very high.”

For Yuvallos, the country’s strengths go beyond population size and geography. He pointed to infrastructure, logistics, manufacturing, tourism, education, and technology as sectors that could benefit from shifting global capital.

The challenge, he said, is to stop looking at development in isolation and instead focus on building interconnected “ecosystems.”

“I always emphasize ecosystem, ecosystem, ecosystem,” Yuvallos said. “Infrastructure, technology, talent development, education pipelines, logistics — these must work together.”

He cited Cebu as an example of how ecosystem thinking can transform regional economies. According to Yuvallos, Metro Cebu already possesses many of the foundations needed for growth: export manufacturing, tourism, education hubs, and strategic port access. What is needed now is identifying the gaps and investing around them.

He sees strong potential for manufacturing in northern Cebu and for shipbuilding industries in Western Cebu. Companies such as Mitsumi have already established a manufacturing presence in Danao City while Cebu’s maritime heritage gives it a natural advantage for shipbuilding and marine-related industries.

“Cebu could become a shipbuilding capital of Asia,” he said.

But achieving this, he stressed, will require government support in technical education, engineering training, supply chain development, and infrastructure connectivity.

“We need welders, technical expertise, engineering, ship design,” he said. “Government and the private sector must support the ecosystem so it matures.”

Yuvallos also highlighted southern Cebu’s potential for tourism, retirement living, and residential developments anchored on heritage and natural attractions.

Rather than treating industries separately, he believes the province should connect them into one integrated economic network — linking logistics hubs, ports, manufacturing centers, tourism zones, and industrial corridors.

“When you connect manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and infrastructure together, the ecosystems become stronger,” he explained.

Part of this vision includes building infrastructure that directly supports industry growth. Yuvallos pointed to the importance of international ports, transport corridors, and road networks that can reduce logistics costs and attract foreign manufacturers.

He noted that investors from countries such as Japan are constantly evaluating efficiency, transport costs, and supply chain reliability before entering new markets.

“The government must allow and build infrastructure that supports the ecosystem,” he said. “It makes the Philippines more attractive for investment.”

Yuvallos also urged policymakers and business leaders to think more creatively and competitively, especially as neighboring countries aggressively position themselves for global manufacturing and supply chain expansion.

Thailand, he said, offers a useful model through its layered manufacturing ecosystem, where major global brands are supported by direct suppliers and small and medium enterprises integrated into the supply chain.

“That is how you build value chains,” he explained. “You think of the supply chain, infrastructure, technology transfer, and talent pipelines.”

For Yuvallos, the Middle East crisis is ultimately reshaping the global investment map. The question for the Philippines is whether it can move fast enough to capture the opportunities emerging from those changes.

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is set to convene Cebu’s leading business figures, industry stakeholders, government partners, and member enterprises for the highly anticipated Joint General Membership Meeting (GMM) and Cebu Business Month (CBM) 2026 Grand Opening Salvo on May 22, 2026, at the SkyHall at SM Seaside City Cebu.

More than an annual gathering, this year’s event marks a defining institutional milestone for the Chamber as it formally transitions leadership from outgoing 51st President Jay Y. Yuvallos to incoming 52nd President Regan Rex T. King.

The ceremonial turnover of the presidential medallion symbolizes not only continuity in leadership, but also CCCI’s enduring commitment to championing business growth, economic resilience, and regional development in Cebu and beyond. The evening will culminate with the inaugural address of President King, who is expected to unveil the Chamber’s strategic priorities and vision for the coming year.

This year’s gathering carries even greater significance as CCCI strategically merges its Joint General Membership Meeting with the official opening of Cebu Business Month 2026: a move that underscores the Chamber’s commitment to aligning organizational leadership, member engagement, and economic collaboration under one unified platform.

By integrating the Chamber’s largest membership assembly with the launch of Cebu Business Month, CCCI aims to create stronger synergy among its stakeholders while reinforcing the shared responsibility of the private sector in shaping Cebu’s economic future. The joint event also reflects the evolving role of the Chamber-not only as a business organization, but as a catalyst for innovation, partnerships, investment promotion, and regional transformation.

As part of the program, newly elected officers and trustees will also be formally inducted, reinforcing the Chamber’s strong culture of service-driven leadership and collaborative governance within the private sector.

In a strong show of organizational growth and inclusivity, CCCI will officially welcome and induct 19 new member companies into the Chamber network. The expansion reflects the growing confidence of enterprises in the Chamber as a vital platform for business collaboration, advocacy, innovation, and economic engagement across diverse industries.

Adding prestige to the occasion, Ferdinand “Perry” A. Ferrer, President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), will deliver the keynote message. His address is expected to highlight the importance of collective action, future-ready leadership, and stronger industry linkages in accelerating both regional competitiveness and national economic progress.

The evening will then build toward the official launch of Cebu Business Month 2026 through a grand Opening Salvo celebration - a vibrant showcase of Cebu’s dynamic business ecosystem, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaborative energy. The kickoff event will bring together leaders from business, government, academe, and civil society in a shared commitment to advancing Cebu’s position as a premier hub for investment, innovation, and sustainable growth.

Anchored on the continuing rallying call, “Padayon Cebu,” CBM 2026 aims to inspire unity, resilience, and forward momentum as Cebu navigates an increasingly evolving economic landscape.

This year’s Cebu Business Month will feature a robust lineup of programs and initiatives centered around five strategic pillars:

· Investment and Entrepreneurship

· Technology and Innovation

· Tourism and MICE

· Good Design. Good Business.

· Business in Golf

These pillars will be driven by industry champions, sector leaders, and collaborative working teams representing Cebu’s diverse business community.

Bryan O. Yap, Overall Chairman of CBM 2026, will present the year’s strategic direction and thematic vision, reinforcing Cebu Business Month’s role as one of the region’s premier platforms for economic collaboration, enterprise development, innovation, and regional transformation.

For decades, Cebu Business Month has served as a catalyst for meaningful partnerships, thought leadership, and business opportunities that contribute to Cebu’s sustained economic momentum. The 2026 edition seeks to further strengthen Cebu’s reputation as a globally competitive and future-ready business destination.

The Cebu Chamber invites the business community, institutional partners, and stakeholders to be part of this landmark gathering as it ushers in a new chapter of leadership and officially launches the grand celebration of Cebu Business Month 2026.

Each member company is entitled to one (1) complimentary seat. Additional participants may register for ₱1,500 per person.
