Welcome to The Pawn Chronicle, a magazine born from 64 squares, yet meant to speak far beyond the chessboard.
In the Philippines, chess is not just knights and bishops, rooks and pawns. It is the story of communities gathering in barangay plazas, of heartbreaks played out in humid school gyms, of families who sacrifice so much because they believe one brilliant move can change the course of a life.
Here, the pawns have voices. We invite players, coaches, arbiters, parents, and dreamers to share their journeys, whether it's your first victory, your worst blunder, or your quiet fight to keep the game alive in your corner of the country.
But we also look past the board. We will confront questions of honesty and governance in our institutions, because what happens behind closed doors often determines the opportunities in front of us. We will spotlight tournaments across the archipelago, from grassroots blitzes to national championships, and place them alongside the global stage, where Filipinos continue to prove that talent knows no borders.
Chess is more than a pastime. It is a mirror of our society, a battlefield of ideas, and a record of how we treat each other. And through it all, one truth never changes: every pawn carries the possibility of becoming a queen.
