The penalists who answered questions from the audience were Bobby Nalzaro, Michelle So, Kevin Maglinte, Lorenzo Niñal, Anol Mongaya and Nini Cabaero.

"Let's say four years from now, I'm sure internet commenting will still be there, as long as the internet is there, so the rules will be different. For journalists-to-be, future journalists like you, it will really be interesting in a way that it is an opportunity for you to learn more," answered Ms. Cabaero when asked what she thinks the future of journalism will be with the kind of culture social media has cultivated now.

EXCLUSIVE: IS THIS DR. JIOLITO BENITEZ’ LAST INTRAMURALS AS DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES?

Cebu Normal University is still coping with the recent retirement of Dr. Marcelo Lopez as university President, yet it looks like the students need to bid goodbye to another administrator.

In an interview after the announcement of CAS as this year’s Intramurals overall champion, Dr. Jiolito Benitez mentioned that this year is his last as the Dean of College of Arts and Sciences.

Benitez told CNU Chronicle that he has resigned as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and it shall be effective on October 15, 2016.

‘WHY IS HE RESIGNING?’

“I want to pursue a post doctorate degree. I’m still young; I need to study. I need to improve,” answered Dr. Benitez when asked why he has decided to resign.

He said that he wants to learn more, and that he is too young to be an administrator. He also admitted that the three accreditation periods involving 22 programs took a heavy toll on him. He was emotionally, physically, and intellectually exhausted, and so he needs to take a break and discover more about himself.

‘ON HIS DEANSHIP’

Dr. Benitez said that deans are usually appointed for a year but when he assumed office, he was appointed for more than two years; and it was his first. Prior to deanship, he has never been a chair of any small department or handled an administrative post, so he was doing and learning at the same time. He had to master the responsibilities of being a dean right then and there.

“During my first days, my biggest problems were how to do the papers, how to run the office,” Dr. Benitez added. He then said that learning to work on the papers was the easiest part and that what he struggled on was how to deal with his people.

“The most challenging part was how to deal with problematic people, problematic faculty.” During the first few weeks, Dr. Benitez recalls that when he calls for a 2 o’clock meeting, many arrive at 3 PM or some don’t come at all. He has always reminded the faculty ever since that they are public servants and that they owe it to the government to do their duties and responsibilities.

“I’m not asking for your virtue or for a sacrifice, I’m asking you to fulfill the barest minimum of your duty,” he answered when asked what he wants to say to the faculty.

‘STUDENTS AND FACULTY of CAS’

“There are still pockets of oppressions between students and faculty. I see that we have not yet fully established the independence, the liberty of the students.” Dr. Benitez said that some students still look at professors and feel like they do not have the freedom at all.

He also called on a culture he’s observed and seen where some professors don’t go to class or give assignments haphazardly. He promised that dean or not, he will always be helping the students in whatever way he can as he has always done.

‘MESSAGE TO COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES STUDENTS’

“CAS is populated by people of different disciplines, we are diverse, we are very colorful but in the midst and despite of the issues, we’re still able to function and perform very well compared to other institutions. In fact, I think we are one of the best!”

To Dr. Jiolito Benitez, in whatever endeavor you pursue, CNU will always be behind you.

LOOK: Charles Juliano, Governor of the Council of Liberal Arts and Sciences Students (CLASS), feels mixed emotions after CAS was announced the over-all champion this Intramurals. This year is the 16th consecutive win of CAS.

"I am proud of the athletes, the officers, myself, the college and the students. Thank you for supporting CAS all the way and for those who haven't supported yet, this is not the last battle for all of us," Charles said. Juliano hopes that the support of everyone will not stop after this Intramurals but will continue the entire school year.

Most CAS students are now expecting the usual Ice Cream Party celebration they've gotten used to after winning every championship title during Intrams but as of the moment CLASS is yet to check their budget to know if the Ice Cream party is still a possibility.

LOOK: Dr. Jiolito Benitez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, overjoyed with the victory of CAS on this year's Intramurals. The liberals' cheer of blissfulness deafened and drowned the sorrow of the losing teams after the declaration of CAS' continued legacy.

"This is Intramurals and the champions of Intramurals is CAS so we have the biggest joy," said Dr. Benitez in an interview right after CAS was hailed the over-all champion of Intramurals 2016.

"Well, I think the CLASS officers wanted it. The students contributed a lot by wanting it but ultimately, the athletes did it," he answered when asked of the reason to CAS' continued winning streak.

In the past four days, the struggle of the athletes and the participants from the different colleges and campuses in trying to win the championship title was evident but in the end, College of Arts and Sciences triumphed.
