The Sunken Cemetery in Camiguin is one of the island’s most iconic and historical landmarks, symbolizing both tragedy and resilience. It was once part of the old town of Bonbon in Catarman, a peaceful community that stood near the foot of Mount Vulcan. However, on April 30, 1871, Mount Vulcan erupted violently, and the eruption continued for several years, bringing massive destruction to the surrounding areas. The intense volcanic activity and repeated earthquakes caused the land to gradually sink beneath the sea, a process known as land subsidence. As a result, the town’s cemetery, along with homes and other structures, was submerged underwater, leaving behind only memories of the once-thriving community. To honor the lives lost and to mark the location of the old burial ground, a large white cross was erected in 1982, now standing above the sea as a memorial. Today, the Sunken Cemetery serves as both a historical monument and a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a poignant reminder of Camiguin’s volcanic past and the enduring spirit of its people.
