WATCH: Sen. Alan Cayetano said the DPWHs mandate of nation-building is two-fold: building infrastructure and cleaning up corruption within the department.

He added that these priorities must go hand in hand, as stopping public works to chase corruption would hurt the country even more.
Secretary Vince Dizon agreed, affirming that both goals are central to the President’s directives to the DPWH.

Gikwestiyon ni Legarda si Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon kon makatarunganon ba nga ipatuman ang 25 ngadto sa 30 porsiyento nga pagputol sa tanang infrastructure line items sa DPWH.

WATCH: The National Expenditure Program (NEP) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for next year has been reduced by almost 29%, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said during the budget deliberation held in the Senate today, October 20.

In total, P255.53 billion has been reduced from its previous P881.31 billion proposed funding.

WATCH: The number of classroom backlogs could reach 200,000 by 2028, after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) revealed that only 22 classrooms were completed in 2025.

During the hearing on the DPWH’s proposed 2026 budget, Senate Committee on Basic Education Chairman Senator Bam Aquino expressed disappointment with the agency after learning that only 22 out of the target 1,700 classrooms had been finished this year.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon himself expressed surprise over the low number of completed classrooms.

He said the DPWH would investigate the cause of the delays and implement measures to speed up classroom construction.

WATCH: Ombudsman Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla announced that preliminary investigations will begin this week in six cases related to the flood control projects anomaly.

According to OMB. Remulla, it is expected to begin specifically in cases in Oriental Mindoro and ghost projects in Bulacan.

WATCH: Continuing its inquiry this Monday, October 20, regarding agricultural smuggling in the Philippines, Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform chair Senator Kiko Pangilinan revealed that there is sufficient circumstantial evidence that Chinese syndicates are colluding with Filipino businessmen who are protected by employees and government officials in the Customs, NBI, PNP, DA and possibly even the DOJ and Bureau of Immigration.

According to the Senator, the "big picture" behind agri smuggling in the country is already forming, which the official likened to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) where there are Filipino accomplices.

The Senate panel is set to summon about 12 Chinese nationals who are believed to be colluding with local traders who were recently charged with misdeclared and smuggled agricultural goods.

A Bureau of Customs official was cited in contempt for evading the committee's investigation.
