This is the BYD Leopard 3—or, from what we’ve heard, it might be called the Titanium 3 when it officially arrives here in the Philippines.

Luckily, Tito Edwin got his hands on one early! You’ve probably already seen this head-turner cruising around Cebu.

Check out its auto-parking feature. It’s seriously impressive—and just one of the many cool features of this amazing electric vehicle.

“EV batteries down the road”

This is probably one of the most common concerns we hear from non-EV users.

So instead of arguing, let’s put some NUMBERS into perspective.

🏠 FIRST: COMPARE AN EV BATTERY TO A HOME SOLAR BATTERY

A typical residential solar setup might have:

🔋 5 kWh battery
🔋 10 kWh battery
🔋 15 kWh battery

Now look at a typical EV:

🚗 60 kWh battery

That means one 60 kWh EV battery contains the same nominal energy capacity as:

60 ÷ 15 = FOUR 15 kWh home batteries.

That is a HUGE amount of energy storage sitting underneath one car.



📉 “BUT THE BATTERY DEGRADES!”

Correct. All batteries degrade.

But they don’t suddenly become useless.

Geotab’s latest large-scale study analyzed more than 22,700 EVs across 21 models and found average battery degradation of approximately 2.3% per year.

Geotab projects an average battery to retain about 81.6% of its original capacity after 8 years.

So let’s use a simple 60 kWh EV as an example:

NEW:
🔋 60 kWh = 100%

AT 81.6%:
🔋 60 × 0.816 = 48.96 kWh

That’s still almost 49 kWh of usable battery capacity.

If that EV originally had around 500 km of usable range, 81.6% of that theoretical range would still be roughly:

500 km × 81.6% = 408 km

Real-world range will of course depend on driving, temperature, vehicle efficiency, charging habits and battery chemistry.

But think about this:

If your normal daily commute is only 10–30 km, would a car capable of hundreds of kilometers suddenly become useless just because its battery has lost some capacity?

Of course not.



🚗 SO WHY WOULD I AUTOMATICALLY THROW AWAY MY EV AFTER 8–10 YEARS?

If it still:

⚡ gets me where I need to go
⚡ costs much less to fuel than gasoline
⚡ requires relatively little drivetrain maintenance
⚡ has enough range for my daily needs

…I may simply KEEP USING IT.

An older EV doesn’t automatically become a useless EV.



♻️ AND HERE’S THE PART MANY PEOPLE MISS: SECOND LIFE.

Eventually a battery may no longer be ideal for automotive use.

That STILL doesn’t necessarily mean it’s garbage.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that EV batteries can still have around 70% of their original capacity when they reach the end of their automotive life, and they can potentially continue working in stationary energy-storage applications for another 10 years or more.

So imagine our 60 kWh EV battery reaching 70%:

60 kWh × 70% = 42 kWh

Remember our 15 kWh home battery comparison?

42 ÷ 15 = 2.8

That old EV battery still contains the equivalent nominal capacity of almost THREE 15 kWh home batteries.

Instead of pushing a car around, it can potentially enter a SECOND LIFE:

☀️ Solar energy storage
🏠 Home backup power
🏢 Building energy storage
🌾 Farm energy storage
⚡ EV charging support
🏘️ Community or microgrid applications

And this isn’t just an EV advocate’s idea.

The U.S. Department of Energy is already funding projects specifically designed to repurpose used EV batteries for stationary energy storage.



🔄 AND AFTER SECOND LIFE?

Then comes recycling and material recovery.

So the battery lifecycle can look like this:

🚗 FIRST LIFE
Power the EV for many years.

⬇️

🏠 SECOND LIFE
Repurpose usable batteries for stationary energy storage.

⬇️

♻️ FINAL STAGE
Recover and recycle valuable battery materials.

That’s a much more accurate picture than:

“EV battery gets old → throw it away.”



💡 THE QUESTION I ASK MYSELF AS AN EV OWNER IS SIMPLE:

If 10 years from now my EV still has plenty of range for my daily needs…

and it is STILL saving me money every kilometer I drive…

why would I automatically replace it?

And even when the battery eventually becomes unsuitable for the car, it may still have significant value as an energy-storage asset.

EV batteries aren’t perfect.

They degrade.

They eventually reach end of automotive life.

But “degraded” and “useless” are two completely different things.

That distinction changes the entire conversation about EV battery waste.

Every 6mos (about 5,000 kms) BMS calibration…

…preferably below 10% State Of Charge when you start charging, and charge without interruption up to 100%.

As a general Rule of Thumb…the lesser heat your battery producea (any rechargeable batter, from Cellphones, powerbanks, toy batteries, etc) while charging, the better for the battery’s health.

Note: on regular charging days, our EVs are charged when it is in the 40-50% SOC range, and normally charged up to 80%-100%.

Its About six months since the last BMS (Battery Management System) Calibration on this Volkswagen ID6 PRO.

Calibrating it again again today.
Opted for a slow charging current of 13A (about 2.8kW at 220V) from 10%-100%
It will take about 27 hours for the 75kWh (90% of the 84kWh car capacity) battery.

YES it takes that long for a slow charger for a big battery.

Why not use the full 7kW 32A of the home wall charger, you might ask?

Well, this is an extra car at the moment because our other EV user is out of the country.
A gentle charging current is always better for ANY BATTERY, not much heat produced while charging…so why Not?

Note: charging at 7kW (32A) is perfectly fine, I will take that route if the car needs to be used sooner.
