CREATING DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
by: ATTY. GERRY CARILLO
Atty. Raul Lambino has stirred up an interesting conversation with his proposal to create a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the Philippines, moving the Philippine National Police (PNP) under its wing. His idea focuses on shielding the PNP from the political shenanigans that have often hampered its effectiveness. Let’s be honest: the interplay between politics and law enforcement can often lead to compromised justice and security. By establishing a standalone DHS, we could give the PNP the freedom it needs to do its job without the looming shadow of political interference.
Imagine a scenario where police operations are guided purely by the principles of law enforcement rather than political agendas. Atty. Lambino's perspective suggests that this realignment could allow the PNP to prioritize public safety more effectively. In a time when security concerns are on the rise, having an independent body solely focused on maintaining law and order seems like a step in the right direction.
Ultimately, it raises a crucial question: should we separate law enforcement from the political sphere? Atty. Lambino’s proposal could be a starting point for a more efficient, impartial police force, ensuring that peace and security aren’t just lofty ideals but realities for every Filipino. It’s definitely a discussion worth having!
