Did you know that the very first McDonald’s in Cebu opened its doors in October 1992? That’s right! more than 30 years ago, the world-famous golden arches lit up for the first time right in the heart of Osmeña Boulevard.
But here’s the interesting part...
The branch was built inside a structure that was never completed, a building that was originally meant to become a hotel but was left unfinished. Instead of guests checking in, Cebuanos were lining up for burgers, fries, and sundaes. And for many, that unusual building quickly became an iconic and nostalgic hangout spot.
A photo taken during its grand opening shows an excited crowd gathered outside, curious to try what was then a new taste in town. The energy was high, the lines were long, and Cebu’s fast food scene would never be the same again.
That first McDonald’s didn’t just serve food, it marked the beginning of a fast food boom across Cebu in the ‘90s. It was a cultural moment. A part of growing up for many locals.
Today, the location still stands as a reminder of where it all began. And while McDonald’s has expanded massively since then, with nearly 20 branches in Cebu City alone, this Osmeña Boulevard branch remains a true piece of urban history.
