Visayas placed under extended Yellow Alert on May 21
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas grid was placed under an extended yellow alert on May 21, 2026.
The alert is in effect from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Available capacity was recorded at 2,668 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,486 MW.
NGCP reported that 11 power plants have been on forced outage since May 2026, one since March 2026, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and two since 2021. Fourteen plants are also operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 870.2 MW unavailable to the grid.
The extended yellow alert was attributed to the continued unavailability of large coal plants Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) Units 1 and 2 and Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) Unit 3, as well as an increase in forecasted system demand by around 43 MW.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
