𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼, for sharing their insights and experiences; to the panelists for their valuable perspectives; and to 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹, under the stewardship of 𝗠𝘀. 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼, for graciously hosting such an immersive event and for the delicious food.

Our workshop last 𝟯𝟭 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 was deeply impactful. We talked about how AI is often generic, but our stories are not. It was a day of realizing that if we see AI as a tool, not a threat, we can use it to protect our culture, honor the past, and create content that actually means something.

The challenge now is not just learning new tools, but knowing how to use them to preserve the soul of a place and give a voice back to those history tries to erase.

It explored the intersection of human rights, crime reporting, and media ethics by emphasizing humane and ethical crime reporting, the presumption of innocence and the importance of minimizing harm, equal protection of the law for both the media and individuals, and responsible, critical information sharing. Some of these key points were shared and reflected on throughout the forum, leaving participants with valuable insights and practical lessons they can apply in their own fields.

PLt. Cruz also introduced 𝙑𝙞𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙏𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡.𝙘𝙤𝙢, a tool that analyzes suspicious files, domains, IPs, and URLs to detect malware and breaches.

Concluding the program, 𝗢𝗵! 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗮 gave a special performance, offering a glimpse of their upcoming concert “𝘽𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞 𝙨𝙖 𝙂𝙪𝙜𝙢𝙖.”

🌟 The star of the event: 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐥, Kapuso reporter and 24 Oras anchor. With over 20 years in journalism, Emil shared stories that shaped his career: the Lost Sabungeros case, jail exposés, and his I-Witness documentary “Sa Pusod ng Digmaan”.

last 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟴, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the University of San Carlos – Downtown Campus a 𝟭𝟬𝟴𝟭 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 was held where students, youth leaders, and advocates gathered to revisit the truths behind Proclamation 1081 and Martial Law.

Four notable speakers — 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗻 of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines – Cebu, 𝗝𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗼 of Kabataan Partylist – Cebu, 𝗝𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 of Alyansa sa mga Mamumuo sa Sugbo – Kilusang Mayo Uno, and 𝗥𝗲𝘁. 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀—shared stories of resistance, censorship, and courage.

During the Q&A portion, Ret. Judge Paredes shared,“𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙,” reminding us that the struggle to uphold truth, justice, and people’s rights does not end with age or position. Especially today, when it is easy to become complacent or distracted, his words serve as a call for each generation to stay vigilant and continue the work.

They spoke about the rise of the “Mosquito Press” that persisted despite government attempts to silence them, the issuance of Letter of Instruction No. 1A ordering the seizure and closure of private media on September 22, 1972, the surge of student activism in Cebu during the First Quarter Storm, and more.

Speakers also underscored how journalists once vocal about liberty became Martial Law censors under Proclamation 1081. They reminded attendees that to be detained during Martial Law was seen as a “𝙗𝙖𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙧,” and that holding a press ID is not merely a credential but a responsibility to those who fought and died for press freedom.

More than a history lesson, the discussion became a call to remember, reflect, and carry forward the struggle for truth and freedom.

The 2nd-year 𝑩𝑨 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 of 𝑪𝒆𝒃𝒖 𝑵𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚 (BJ, FM, IMCPR, Mile, OM, PJ) explored the vibrant world of broadcasting with a station tour at 𝗗𝗬𝗛𝗣 and 𝗶𝗙𝗠 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂.

Guided by 𝑫𝒐𝒄 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒐-𝑻𝒖𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏, the students stepped into the core of radio operations, experiencing everything from news delivery and commentary to DJ hosting, music mixing, and technical production.

The tour also featured personal encounters with notable media figures:

From menstruation and period poverty, to teenage pregnancy, HIV awareness, safe spaces, labor rights, and LGBTQIA+ struggles — the conversation at Calamba Gym, Cebu City hit the core issues affecting youth and women in our communities.

Students from various universities and members of different sectors attended the event. Key voices from grassroots orgs, student leaders, and advocates highlighted:
🌸 Reproductive Health Education as a life skill (Body & Health, Respect & Consent, Safety, Values & Relationships)
🌸 Protection against harassment, grooming, and exploitation
🌸 Labor rights and mental health struggles of young workers
🌸 SOGIE, equality, and safe spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community

And of course, Senator Risa Hontiveros herself shared powerful insights on women’s rights, mental health, and cybercrime prevention — reminding us:

𝗔𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵.

What should have been lifelines for the vulnerable became playgrounds for greed.

It all came to a head with three words that pierced the nation’s conscience: “Mahiya naman kayo.” President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s rebuke laid bare a scandal bigger than the storms battering the Philippines. Since 2022, ₱545 billion has been poured into flood control projects yet more than ₱𝟯𝟱𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 vanished into substandard works, missing papers, and ghost projects.

In a country where flooding is as routine as rain, every peso matters. Still, over 𝟲,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 remain undocumented or duplicated. Losses are pegged at up to ₱𝟭𝟭𝟴.𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, money that could have created 266,000 jobs or built defenses to save families. Senator Erwin Tulfo called it for what it was, “a grand robbery.”

But the scandal hit deeper than numbers. Each missing canal left a barangay submerged, while elites flaunted privilege online, showcasing luxury bags and private jets amid crisis. One political clan paraded cars and wealth, while another public official’s daughter dismissed dynasties as a “non issue.” To Filipinos, these displays became symbols of betrayal, communities drowning as the powerful flaunted fortunes.

The fallout was swift. The DPWH secretary resigned. Vince Dizon, his replacement, suspended bidding, blacklisted contractors, and launched geo tagged audits. The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee held hearings, while 30 civic and business groups branded the scandal “treason” and demanded an independent probe. Even Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David urged the youth to “make corruption shameful again,” warning that moral decay is as destructive as rising waters.

This was not just graft, it was abandonment. The poorest were left exposed not only to floods but to a system that failed them long before the rains arrived. Yet out of outrage, a movement is stirring. Citizens, civic leaders, and celebrities are speaking out, turning frustration into pressure.

The Philippines stands at a crossroads. If leaders confront corruption with courage, “𝙈𝙖𝙝𝙞𝙮𝙖 𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙠𝙖𝙮𝙤” will echo not as shame but as resolve, a reminder that this nation deserves better. Rebuilding flood defenses with honesty may yet rebuild something greater, the trust that keeps a people afloat.
