Cebu streets flooded as youth, sectoral groups continue Trillion Peso March on Bonifacio Day
Student organizations, progressive groups, and religious sectors gathered in different parts of Cebu on Sunday for the continuation of the “Trillion Peso March,” calling for government accountability, lower prices of basic goods, and systemic reforms. In the morning, protest groups marched from Fuente Osmeña Circle to Colon Street, drawing participants from the University of the Philippines, University of San Carlos, Cebu Normal University, and Cebu Technological University, along with Anakbayan, Kabataan, Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Partido Lakas ng Masa, BMP-PLM-Sanlakas, and Piston Cebu.
Protest leaders raised concerns over corruption, poor delivery of public services, increasing poverty, rising prices, and the alleged misuse of public funds—issues they said reflect long-standing problems in governance that have worsened under recent administrations.
The demonstration also served as a symbolic continuation of the September 21 protests, with participants invoking the spirit of the Katipunan and calling for collective resistance against injustice.
In the afternoon, a prayer-centered mobilization initiative led by Cebu Archbishop Alberto S. Uy, D.D. — SuPaKK (Sugbuanong Pakigbisog Kontra Korapsyon) — commenced with a Holy Mass at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu. After the mass, participants staged a walkout towards Fuente Osmeña Circle, where youth groups and rallyists again converged, flooding the streets from Colon to Fuente with thousands of people in a unified call against corruption and injustice.
The day’s activities concluded peacefully, with organizers urging the public to remain vigilant and continue participating in future mobilizations. As of press time, no official statement has yet been released by government authorities or the police regarding the demonstrations.
