Things to know:

International regulations (MARPOL Annex IV)
General rule: Ships must not discharge sewage into the sea.
Discharging treated sewage: Allowed if the ship has an approved sewage treatment plant and can prove the effluent meets specific standards (e.g., no visible solids, no discoloration).
Discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage: Allowed at a distance of 3 nautical miles or more from the nearest land.
Discharging raw sewage: Only permitted at a distance of 12 nautical miles or more from the nearest land.
Holding tanks: All sewage, whether treated or untreated, must be discharged while the ship is en route at a speed of at least 4 knots.
