Igniting the Flame of Resilience and Solidarity

Today the Philippines commemorates the 51st declaration of Martial Law by former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. This period in Philippine history is marked by repression, human rights abuses and widespread suffering. However, it also ignited a flame of resilience and solidarity among the Filipino people. As we remember the sacrifices made during this challenging time, it is important to reflect on the past and work towards upholding democracy justice and human rights.

Dark Period of Repression and Human Rights Abuses:
During the Martial Law era approximately 70000 individuals were arrested often without proper warrants. These individuals faced various forms of rights abuses including torture and violence. Amnesty International reports that around 34000 people were subjected to torture while 3240 lost their lives due to military and police actions.

The human rights violations committed under Martial Law were pervasive and affected individuals from all walks of life. Activists, journalists, artists and ordinary citizens who spoke up against the dictatorship were targeted and silenced. The Marcos regime used its power and authority to suppress dissent and maintain control over the Philippine society.

The Flame of Resilience:
Despite the darkness that enveloped the nation during Martial Law, the Filipino people demonstrated their resilience and refusal to accept oppression. Activists and ordinary citizens alike found ways to resist and fight for their rights and freedoms.

Civil society organizations student movements and religious groups played a crucial role in organizing protests advocating for justice and spreading awareness about the human rights abuses taking place. Underground publications and artistic expressions became powerful tools for mobilizing support and conveying the truth about the atrocities occurring beneath the surface.

The Filipino spirit of bayanihan or collective action flourished during this time of adversity. Neighbors friends and families supported one another offering refuge and protection to those who were being targeted. This solidarity among the Filipino people became a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of Martial Law.

Upholding Democracy Justice and Human Rights:
As we reflect on the past and commemorate the struggles of those who fought against dictatorship, it is crucial to recognize that the fight for democracy justice and human rights is not yet over. The echoes of Martial Law can still be felt in the present with threats to freedom of expression attacks on media workers and unresolved cases of human rights violations.

It is our responsibility as citizens to ensure that the lessons of history are not forgotten. By actively participating in our democracy, demanding transparency and accountability from our leaders and speaking out against abuses of power we can continue the fight for a just and democratic society.

Moreover, education is a powerful tool in preventing the repetition of history's mistakes. It is important to educate the younger generations about the dark period of Martial Law, teaching them to value democracy, human rights and the importance of speaking up against injustice.

Today, as we commemorate the 51st declaration of Martial Law, we remember the sacrifices made by countless Filipinos and the resilience they displayed in the face of repression. Their struggle for democracy, justice and human rights continues to inspire us.

Let us honor their memory by upholding the principles they fought for and never allowing the darkness of the past to engulf us again. Together we can build a society that values freedom dignity and the inherent rights of every citizen.

Back to School on August 29

Oh how the summer days have passed by
With laughter and warmth under the clear sky.
But now it's time to bid the sun farewell
As we return to our desks with stories to tell.

August 29, a date etched in our minds
A fresh start awaits where knowledge unwinds.
The school gates open bursting with life
As learners gather filled with anticipation and strife.

New friendships will bloom old ones will grow
In each classroom seeds of curiosity will sow.
Teachers like guides will light our way
Igniting passions to brighten the school day.

The halls echo with footsteps a rhythmic sound
As we navigate the building familiar and profound.
Lockers once empty now hold our dreams
With textbooks and notebooks bursting at the seams.

Pencils, erasers and pens neatly arranged
Ready to embark on a journey to be engaged.
Lessons and lectures both challenging and fun
Expanding our minds as each day begins.

Math and science, history and art
Each subject holding a piece of our heart.
Languages, literature and the world unknown
With every lesson, our minds are grown.

With wide-eyed wonder, we explore and learn
As the bridge of knowledge continues to discern.
Each day a chance to discover something new
To expand our horizons and pursue.

Back to school, a season of change and growth
A time to embrace challenges no matter the cost.
We'll strive to reach the stars to soar high and wide
With ambition as our guide, we'll rise and stride.

So, as August 29 arrives at last
Let's cherish the memories of summers that have passed.
For the journey ahead we'll prepare and stay true
To make this school year our very best through and through.
