In 1987 Philippine Constitution Article II: SECTION 1 that states: The Philippines is a democratic and republican State. Sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them.

In the first three years, from 1972 to 1975, Marcos’ forces arrested more than 50,000 Filipinos—including students, journalists, workers, and activists—according to a report by Amnesty International, a global human rights organization. A lot of families who searched for loved ones who never came home and the communities lived under constant fear of midnight raids and military checkpoints.

Marcos promised stability and progress, but his rule was marked by fear and repression. Even after he lifted Martial Law in 1981, he clung to power until millions of Filipinos did throw him out during the People Power Revolution in 1986.
