Unsay Imong Toyo og Tumong?

Cebu’s Startup Ecosystem Builders (SEB), together with tech community leaders and student representatives, gathered at the Cebu Provincial Capitol — where they were asked a simple but meaningful question: “Unsay imong toyo og tumong?” (What is your intention and goal?)

While waiting to meet Governor Pam, each shared their personal motivations and visions for Cebu’s growing startup and innovation community.

SAYANG KUNG HAPITANAN LANG

CAPITOL, CEBU CITY — Members of the startup community, including the Startup Ecosystem Builders (SEB) and various tech organizations in Cebu, gathered at the Cebu Provincial Capitol on October 30, 2025, together with Secretary Ace Durano. The discussion centered on opportunities and initiatives to strengthen the startup and technology ecosystem in Cebu.

One of the key topics raised was the possible repurposing of the Hapitanan sa Sugbo centers. Originally designed as Tourist Rest Areas (TRAs), the Hapitanan sa Sugbo facilities are powered by solar energy and feature air-conditioned lounges, charging stations, tourist information centers, mini food courts serving local dishes, coffee shops, souvenir shops, and modern shower rooms.

Earlier this year, Governor Pam Baricuatro clarified that while the TRAs are valuable, her administration’s top priority remains healthcare. However, Secretary Durano mentioned that Governor Pam is now open to repurposing the Hapitanan centers for more productive community use.

“Can you help us rebrand the Hapitanan centers?” Secretary Durano asked the group. “Its got the big open space — like a big lounge — and a restrooms.”

When asked by the group if the facilities have Wi-Fi, Secretary Durano responded,

“We can always install it.”

He also noted that the Hapitanan centers are open during weekends, making them accessible for possible community or tech-related activities.

Secretary Durano encouraged the group to visit one of the existing sites located in Balamban, which is already operational. The visit, he said, would give them a clearer idea of the facilities and how they might be creatively repurposed.
