As The Freeman, Cebu’s oldest newspaper, marks its 106th founding anniversary on July 18, 2025, the publication continues to spotlight individuals, destinations, and institutions that have made significant contributions to Cebu’s growth and development through its annual ProgreCebu Awards.
Now in its second year, the ProgreCebu Awards, held in partnership with the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, forms part of The Freeman’s initiatives to recognize and promote positive change across the province.
The awarding ceremony gathered local leaders, business executives, and community stakeholders in a program that celebrated Cebu’s progress over the past year.
One of the highlights of the event was a special recognition presented to Cebu City Mayor Engr. Nestor Archival, who was present to receive the award in person. Mayor Archival was commended for his proactive leadership and for introducing policies aimed at improving urban services and promoting sustainability in Cebu City.
Atty. Augusto “Gus” W. Go, founder and chairman of the AWG Group of Companies, was named Most Distinguished Individual.
The Freeman cited Atty. Go’s remarkable contributions in both education and business, particularly through institutions such as the University of Cebu, which has played a key role in shaping the academic landscape of the province.
In the tourism sector, Cebu Safari and Adventure Park in Carmen, Cebu, was recognized as the Most Distinguished Destination.
