Some languages disappear quietly. Others fade when no one remembers how to write them. What we lose is not just letters, but memory, identity, and voice.

ICYMI: More than a decade ago, Inquirer writer Eunice Barbara C. Novio introduced two Filipinos who chose to act before that silence became permanent. Mike Raymon Pangilinan and Norman delos Santos were not chasing recognition. They were protecting something fragile and deeply Filipino.

Pangilinan devoted his work to Súlat Capampáng̃an, also known as Kulitan. It is a writing system built to reflect how the Capampáng̃an language truly sounds, avoiding confusion caused by Roman spelling. For him, saving the script meant saving the language itself from slowly fading into ritual use only.

Delos Santos focused on Mangyan writing systems and Baybayin, showing how modern tools like computer fonts can help ancient scripts survive in a digital world. His work reminds us that tradition does not need to stay frozen in the past to remain authentic.

This is not about nostalgia. It is about continuity. When indigenous scripts survive, communities keep control of their stories, their knowledge, and their way of seeing the world. Preservation is not looking back. It is making sure the future still knows where it came from.
