Kane Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, in Fukuoka, Japan—decades before television became common, before commercial air travel transformed the world, and long before the internet existed. Over the next 119 years, she would witness some of the greatest changes in human history and become an inspiration to millions.
In 2019, Guinness World Records officially recognised Kane as the world's oldest living person at the age of 116 years and 28 days, following the passing of Chiyo Miyako.
Despite her extraordinary age, Kane embraced life's simple pleasures. Living in a nursing home during her later years, she stayed mentally active by playing board games and solving maths puzzles. She also had a well-known sweet tooth, enjoying chocolate and even a glass of soda well into her 100s.
Her remarkable journey captured hearts around the globe. She was selected to carry the Olympic torch for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, a fitting honour for someone whose life spanned more than a century. Although she later withdrew because of COVID-19 concerns, the recognition reflected the admiration people had for her resilience and spirit.
Kane's life wasn't defined only by longevity—it was built on family, perseverance, and hard work. She married Hideo Tanaka in 1922, and together they raised four children while also adopting a fifth. The couple ran successful family businesses selling noodles and rice cakes, creating a life rooted in dedication and determination.
On April 19, 2022, Kane Tanaka passed away at the age of 119 years and 107 days. She remains the second-oldest verified person in recorded history, surpassed only by Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to be 122.
Kane's story is about far more than reaching an incredible age. It is a reminder that a meaningful life is often built through curiosity, resilience, strong family bonds, and finding joy in the little things. Her legacy continues to inspire people around the world, proving that every year of life has the potential to leave a lasting impact. ❤️
