Carrying the theme โNurturing Minds, Empowering Voices, and Inspiring Leaders for Meaningful Social Transformation,โ the Damean Society of Debate and Discourse (DSDD) of Notre Dame University (NDU) held the first debate exhibition of the university, providing students with a platform for critical discourse on the role of celebrities in political endorsements on August 12, 2026, at the CAS Lounge.
The exhibition officially commenced with an opening remarks from Mr. Glenn S. Cantomayor, DSDD Adviser for Operations, who encouraged the debaters to use their voices in pursuit of truth and positive change. He also emphasized the responsibility of the organization to use debate as a platform for meaningful advocacy and service to the common good while remaining grounded in the university's core values.
โSo no matter what your side is, speak what is right and speak for what you believe is right. So as a debate organization, may we use our voice to spark positive change, inspire, and fight for what is right for the common good and, of course, rooted in our core values: faith, integrity, respect, excellence, and service,โ Mr. Cantomayor said.
The debate began by presenting opposing perspectives on the responsibilities and societal implications of celebrity involvement in political campaigns.
Representing the Affirmative side were Hasanah Mishahal Mansour, Eufah Mikaela Lingasa, and Raiwelyn Muscosa, while Princess Sharah Unad, Alisha Sapal, and Jannah Radel Octaviano represented the Negative side. Through the parliamentary format, both sides presented their arguments and engaged with opposing perspectives, highlighting the importance of critical thinking, research, and constructive discourse in examining complex social issues.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Paul Gieyan Salvacion, DSDD Adviser for Finance expressed his gratitude to the participants who made the exhibition successful. He also expressed hopes for more debate activities in the succeeding semesters, including opportunities to explore debates in local languages to engage a wider university community.
The first DSDD Debate Exhibition concluded with a photo opportunity and adjournment, marking a significant step in establishing debate as a platform for critical thinking, responsible expression, and meaningful social discourse within the university.
