WHO IS ANGEL JIBRIL? And why you can't understand prophets without knowing him
You've probably heard his name a thousand times. "Angel Gabriel." "Jibril brought the Quran." "The angel who came to the Prophet ﷺ." ……..
But who actually IS he? What does he do? Why is he so important? And what does understanding angels have to do with understanding prophets?
Now Let me explain this in a way that finally makes sense.
FIRSTLY WHO IS AN ANGEL?
Before we talk about Jibril specifically, you need to know who the angels ARE👇
Angels are created beings of Allah who are made from LIGHT (not fire like jinn, not clay like humans). They were created to worship Allah and obey His commands PERFECTLY. They never disobey. They don't eat, sleep, marry, or reproduce. They exist purely to serve Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said "The angels were created from light, the jinn were created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from what has been described to you (clay)." (Sahih Muslim 2996)
Now this Angels have different jobs. Some carry the Throne of Allah. Some record your deeds (Kiraman Katibin - the honorable recorders). Some take souls (Angel of Death - Azrael). Some guard Hellfire (Malik and the Zabaniyah).
And ONE angel has the most important job of all: delivering Allah's revelation to the prophets.
That angel is Jibril
WHO IS JIBRIL?
Jibril (Gabriel in English) is the CHIEF of all angels. The highest ranking. The most trusted. The one Allah chose to deliver His messages to every single prophet throughout history.
The Quran calls him "Ruh al-Qudus" (The Holy Spirit) and "Ruh al-Amin" (The Trustworthy Spirit).
Allah says in surah Al baqara "Say, whoever is an enemy to Jibril - it is he who has brought it (the Quran) down upon your heart by permission of Allah." (Quran 2:97)
Jibril didn't just bring the Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He brought revelation to EVERY prophet. He was the messenger between Allah and His human messengers.
When Musa received the Torah - Jibril brought it.
When Isa received the Injeel - Jibril brought it.
When Muhammad ﷺ received the Quran - Jibril brought it.
Every prophet you've ever heard of, received their mission through Jibril.
WHAT DOES JIBRIL LOOK LIKE?
Most of the time, Jibril appeared to prophets in HUMAN form ,a man they could see and speak to normally.
But the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw Jibril in his TRUE angelic form TWICE:
The first time, the Prophet ﷺ described Jibril as having 600 WINGS that filled the entire horizon. So massive that you couldn't see the sky behind him.
"And he certainly saw him in another descent. Near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered it. The sight did not swerve, nor did it transgress. He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord." (Quran 53:13-18)
Aisha رضي الله عنها asked the Prophet ﷺ about this. He said "I saw Jibril. He had 600 wings. Each wing filled the horizon." (Sahih Muslim 177)
Can you imagine? An angel so huge that 600 wings block out the entire sky.
But when Jibril came to deliver revelation, he usually appeared as a handsome man in white clothes. This was to make it easier for the prophets - you can't receive detailed revelation when you're overwhelmed by seeing a cosmic being.
THE FAMOUS HADITH OF JIBRIL
One of the most important hadiths in Islam is called "The Hadith of Jibril." It teaches us the fundamentals of our religion.
One day, while the Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his companions, a man appeared. He had extremely white clothes, extremely black hair, and no signs of travel on him (meaning he appeared suddenly - not dusty from a journey).
He sat in front of the Prophet ﷺ knee-to-knee and asked:
"What is Islam?"
The Prophet ﷺ explained the five pillars.
"What is Iman?"
The Prophet ﷺ explained the six articles of faith.
"What is Ihsan?"
The Prophet ﷺ said "To worship Allah as if you see Him. And if you don't see Him, know that He sees you."
Then the man left. The companions were confused. "Who was that?" …………(Read the complete hadith)
The Prophet ﷺ said "That was Jibril. He came to teach you your religion."
(Sahih Bukhari 50, Sahih Muslim )
Jibril came in human form to ASK questions so the companions could LEARN the answers. That's teaching through dialogue.
This shows you how important Jibril is - he's not just delivering Quran verses. He's teaching the fundamentals of faith itself.
WHY JIBRIL IS ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTANDING PROPHETS
Here's what most people don't realize: You can't separate prophets from Jibril. They're connected.
Every prophet received revelation through Jibril. Every miracle involving divine communication went through Jibril. Every major moment in prophetic history involved Jibril.
When Maryam was told she'd give birth to Isa - Jibril delivered that news.
When Ibrahim was commanded to sacrifice his son - Jibril brought that test.
When Musa spoke to Allah and received commandments - Jibril was the intermediary.
When Muhammad ﷺ went on Isra and Miraj (the Night Journey) - Jibril was his guide.
You're not just studying "prophets." You're studying "prophets who received revelation from Jibril."
That's why the Quran mentions Jibril by name multiple times. Because understanding WHO delivered the message helps you understand HOW it was delivered and WHY it's trustworthy.
Allah could have revealed scripture directly without an angel. But He chose to use Jibril. Why?
To show the PROCESS. To show that revelation is SERIOUS. To show that there's a chain of trustworthiness: Allah → Jibril → Prophet → Ummah.
When you reject Jibril, you reject the prophets. When you reject the prophets, you reject Allah's message.
That's why Allah says "Whoever is an enemy to Jibril - it is he who brought it down upon your heart by permission of Allah." (2:97)
You can't love the Quran but hate Jibril. Because Jibril BROUGHT the Quran.
JIBRIL'S OTHER DUTIES
Jibril wasn't just a messenger. He had other jobs too:
1. He helped prophets in battle - Jibril fought alongside the Muslims at the Battle of Badr with thousands of angels
2. He executed divine punishment - When cities needed to be destroyed (like Lut's people), Jibril would carry out the command
3. He strengthened prophets emotionally - When the Prophet ﷺ was grieving or exhausted, Jibril would come and comfort him
4. He taught practical Islam - Jibril taught the Prophet ﷺ how to make wudu, how to pray, when Ramadan started, etc.
He wasn't just dropping off verses and leaving. He was a TEACHER. A GUIDE. A PROTECTOR.
THE LESSON FOR US
We'll never see Jibril the way the prophets did. But we benefit from his work every single day.
Every time you recite Quran - you're reciting words Jibril brought from Allah.
Every time you pray - you're doing it the way Jibril taught the Prophet ﷺ.
Every time you learn a hadith - you're learning from the religion Jibril came to teach.
Jibril is the reason you HAVE Islam in the first place. Without him, there's no revelation. Without revelation, there's no prophets. Without prophets, there's no guidance.
So when you study prophets, remember: Behind every prophet is Jibril, delivering the message that changed the world.
