A 14-year-old student was found carrying an unloaded .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum revolver inside Lut-od National High School in Barangay Lut-od, Pinamungajan, Cebu, on Thursday afternoon, August 20.

The firearm was discovered by the student’s Grade 9 adviser during a surprise inspection of students’ school bags as a precautionary measure.

The teacher immediately informed the school head, who sought police assistance from the Pinamungajan Municipal Police Station.

Responding officers recovered the .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum revolver with no ammunition from the student’s school bag.

Police said the student, classified as a Child in Conflict with the Law (CICL), allegedly took the firearm from a cabinet at their home. According to investigators, the firearm belonged to the student’s grandfather and had been stored inside the cabinet.

The minor was accompanied by his grandparents, who are residents of Purok Santol, Barangay Lut-od. His mother reportedly works in Cebu City, while his father works in Manila.

The student was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) while police continue their investigation.

Cebu Police Provincial Office Director Police Colonel Abubakar Udang Mangelen Jr. commended the school personnel for their vigilance and prompt coordination with authorities.

β€œThis incident demonstrates the importance of vigilance and proactive safety measures inside our schools. We commend the school personnel for immediately reporting the discovery and seeking police assistance. Their prompt action helped ensure that the situation was contained before it could potentially lead to harm,” Mangelen said.

Mangelen said the CPPO will continue to strengthen police presence and coordination with schools across Cebu province.

Security measures in schools across the province have been heightened following the August 18 shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University that left two people dead.

The intensified security measures are also in line with the directive of Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro.
