Title: Jose Rizal (Digitally Restored and Remastered)
10/10
Sypnosis: Jose Rizal's life and works are recounted through a series of non-linear flashbacks which reflect on various aspects of his life - as writer, propagandist, lover, friend, brother, doctor, and the man that inspired a revolution.
I've been seeing this Jose Rizal movie around for ages—especially when I was a kid. I just never paid much attention to it. I mean, with its ancient-looking poster and video quality, who would? But now that it’s on Netflix, curiosity got the best of me, so I finally gave it a watch.
Turns out, this film wasn’t just another historical drama collecting dust—it actually bagged the Best Picture award at the 1998 MMFF’s 24th Anniversary. And oh, Cesar Montano also snagged Best Actor. No wonder it’s trending on Netflix—maybe everyone else got curious too and thought, “Let’s see what the hype was about back in '98!”
Of course, Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, are still mandatory reading for students today because they exposed the abuses and injustices of the Spanish colonial government. Rizal didn’t just spill the tea—he poured the whole pot.
Cesar Montano had this one scene where he delivered an "insanely" long monologue. I sat there thinking, How is he not out of breath yet.
By the end of the movie, I felt this weird combo of pride and sadness—like, Wow, what a hero, but also why did it have to end like that?
Truly, Rizal deserves all the recognition—and maybe Cesar Montano too for surviving that speech!
