The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) condemned the University of Santo Tomas–Senior High School (UST-SHS) administration for allegedly censoring its official student publication, La Stampa, after publication advisers reportedly blocked content prepared for National Press Freedom Day on August 30.

In a press alert, the CEGP denounced the intervention as a “blatant act of censorship” that undermines press freedom, stressing that such actions constitute a direct attack on the campus press and an attempt to silence dissenting voices despite institutional claims of fostering critical thinking.

The Guild expressed solidarity with La Stampa and called for an immediate end to administrative interference in student media, reiterating that press freedom is a democratic right that must be upheld and defended.

READ: The Coalition of Concerned Lasallians (CCL) released a statement today, September 3, condemning what it described as the “negligence of student rights and welfare” at DLSU-D.

In its statement, CCL raised issues on the recent implementation of dress code policy, Tuition and Other Fees Increases (TOFI), and reports of threats, harassment, and intimidation—matters it said undermine the rights of the student body.

The coalition also expressed solidarity with affected students and urged them to continue asserting their concerns.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE GROSS NEGLIGENCE OF STUDENT RIGHTS AND WELFARE IN DLSU – DASMARINAS

September 3, 2025

The strict adherence of dress code policies in DLSU-D recently caused an outrage among Lasallians, demanding accountability for the gross negligence of student recognition and democracy in the process of its implementation.

Since last Academic Year (2024-2025) the DLSU-D administration introduced new designs of school uniforms to easily identify "infiltrating non-DLSUD students." These were heavily denounced by the studentry, calling them ‘impractical’ and another load of ‘financial burden’ concurrent with the implementation of 3.5% Other Fees Increase (OFI) in the present Academic Year (2025-2026). Nonetheless, the admin maintained their silence on the upheaval of the students in social media and proceeded with the implementation of these new dress code policies this week.

This is not the first time, the DLSU-D administration grossly neglects student rights and welfare to accommodate their self-serving interest in the name of profit. This has been a persisting trend seen in under-the-covers Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI) consultations to sneakily impose annual tuition fee hikes without conducting proper student consultations. We remember the case of the 3% TOFI for Academic Year (2024-2025) implemented without any advisories announced to the student body, raising suspicions in the active efforts of the admin to hide TOFI. The Coalition reaffirms its stance that to combat TOFI is to struggle for a nationalistic, scientific, and mass-oriented education in the Philippines.

On the other hand, the draconian policy Memorandum Of Agreement on Non-Fraternities, Sororities, and Organizations (MOANFSO) institutionalizes violations of civil and political rights in DLSU - D, particularly the right of the students to freedom of expression and association. This not only equates activism as sanctionable actions but also sustains the regressing political efficacy of students within their community by removing their democratic spaces. We remember the cases of CCL and Anakbayan Kalayaan members and Paolo Tarra, subjected to threats, harassments, and intimidation from the Student Welfare and Formation Office (SWAFO) to profile and provide information on National Democratic-affiliated Lasallians, or be given sanctions as high as Expulsion if they refuse threatening their right to access education.

We echo the words of University Provost, Dr. Christian George C. Francisco during the Student Leaders Assembly who reaffirmed his stance that the university is “a haven for the students.” However, student councils and organizations remain chained to administrative policies compromising their autonomy as independent student institutions. We remember the many cases of red-taping of advocacy-based activities of the USG, other student councils and organizations, particularly from Dean Jacqueline Morta of the Office of Student Services (OSS), red-tagging national democratic organizations and maligning activism.

If the university is true to its commitment to protect student welfare and academic freedom, it must also ensure the equal recognition of the DLSU-D administration to student rights and welfare as stated in the University Student Government (USG) constitution. For academic freedom to prosper, critical students and institutions must be allowed democratic spaces to fight for their rights and advocacies.

The Coalition stands in solidarity with the studentry to fight back against repression and urges all Lasallians to continue voicing out their grievances.

DLSU-D, heed the genuine concerns of the students! Uphold student rights and welfare!

Five programs from three colleges of DLSU-D secured five-year reaccreditation from the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU), valid until 2030.

PAASCU representatives conducted an on-site evaluation of programs under the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM), and College of Information and Computer Studies (CICS), reviewing curricula, faculty, facilities, and administration to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.

In a letter addressed to University President Br. Iñigo Riola FSC, PAASCU confirmed that the full accreditation report will be released at a later date.

“We will continue to provide exceptional, quality education for all of our students. This achievement is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, administrators, and students,” University Provost Dr. Christian George Francisco said.

PAASCU is an accrediting organization that evaluates academic programs and institutions in the Philippines to ensure they meet comprehensive standards of quality and excellence in education.

A campus cat named Sevi was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle inside DLSU-D today, September 2, at around 11:20 AM.

In a Facebook post, DLSU-D CATS reported that Sevi was hit in front of the Senior High School (SHS) Complex and did not survive his injuries. The vehicle allegedly did not stop to check on the cat after the accident.

As of press time, the driver has yet to be identified and DLSU-D CATS is aiming to file an incident report.

Sevi was among the most recognized campus cats, often seen at the SHS Complex and Ugnayang La Salle (ULS), where he was familiar to guards and volunteers for his presence.

DLSU-D CATS called on motorists to be cautious to ensure the safety of animals residing in the campus.
