On the first attempt, this cute little critter couldn’t get in when the shrimp house imposed a curfew and closed its doors — but with perfect timing… bloop! Right into the shrimp house!

The cone snail is a beautiful sea snail found in tropical waters that hunts using a fast, harpoon-like tooth to inject venom, and although it looks harmless, its venom is powerful enough to paralyze prey like fish and is even studied for use in pain medicine.

Say hello to one of Dauin’s most photogenic critters—the flamboyant cuttlefish! Come dive with us at Critter Republic!

The Flamboyant cuttlefish is one of the ocean’s most eye-catching little predators—and a perfect example of why places like Dauin are a macro photographer’s dream.

Unlike most cuttlefish, this species doesn’t rely on swimming much. It “walks” along the seafloor using its arms, showing off vivid, pulsing colors—reds, yellows, purples—almost like a living neon sign. Those colors aren’t just for show: they’re a warning. The flamboyant cuttlefish is actually highly venomous, making it as dangerous as it is beautiful.

They’re commonly found in shallow tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, especially in muck diving spots around the Philippines. Because of their size (usually under 10 cm), spotting one feels like discovering a hidden gem.
