Franz Peter Schubert

Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. He was immensely prolific despite living a short life, leaving behind a vast oeuvre of more than 1,000 compositions.

He was renowned for his profound contributions to classical music, particularly in the realms of song and chamber music. Born into a musically inclined family, Schubert showed remarkable talent from a young age, becoming a boy soprano and later studying composition under notable figures like Antonio Salieri.

Muzio Clementi

Muzio Filippo Vincenzo Francesco Saverio Clementi (23 January 1752 – 10 March 1832) was an Italian composer, virtuoso pianist, pedagogue, conductor, music publisher, editor, and piano manufacturer who was mostly active in England.

Encouraged to study music by his father, he was sponsored as a young composer by Sir Peter Beckford, who took him to England to advance his studies. Later, he toured Europe numerous times from his long-standing base in London. It was on one of these occasions, in 1781, that he engaged in a piano competition with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Clementi also produced and promoted his own brand of pianos and was a notable music publisher. Because of this activity, many compositions by Clementi's contemporaries and earlier artists have stayed in the repertoire. Though the reputation of Clementi was exceeded only by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Gioachino Rossini in his day, his popularity languished for much of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Samuel Mataele is a countertenor and music student at the University of Auckland who won the prestigious $50,000 Kiri Te Kanawa Song Quest. The Auckland native, originally from Sacred Heart College, performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to claim New Zealand’s top opera prize.

François Devienne

François Devienne (31 January 1759 – 5 September 1803) was a French composer of the Classical period and professor for flute at the Paris Conservatory.

François Devienne was born in Joinville on January 31st 1759, as the youngest of fourteen children of a saddlemaker, and quickly demonstrated serious aptitudes, as he had sung from his early age in a children’s choir and wrote his first piece (a mass) at the age of 10. From 1779, he played the flute and the bassoon in various formations, such as the Concert Spirituel, where many of his concertos or concert symphonies were performed, two genres in which he excelled and his brilliant writing enhanced the soloist.

After receiving his first musical training as a choirboy in his hometown, he played in various Parisian ensembles as soloist and orchestra player. He studied the flute with Félix Rault; in 1780 he joined the household of Cardinal de Rohan. He was active in Paris as a flutist, bassoonist and composer, and played bassoon at the Paris Opera. He wrote successful operas in the 1790s, including Les Visitandines (1792) which brought him much success.

Devienne also wrote chamber music pieces associating strings and winds (flute and bassoon), and many opéras-comiques among which the most famous, Les Visitandines (1792). An excellent teacher, he taught the flute at the Paris Conservatoire and wrote a famous Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique (1793).

His refined and elegant style, influenced by Mozart, is characterized by a melodic sense and a clear and simple harmony. An excellent instrumentist as well as a talented composer, Francois Devienne mainly contributed to the development of the French concert music in the Europe of Enlightenment. He died in Charenton in May 1803 at the peak of his fame, right after three of his operas had just been performed at the Théâtre Feydeau.

Carl Heinrich Graun

Carl Heinrich Graun (7 May 1704 – 8 August 1759) was a German composer and tenor. Along with Johann Adolph Hasse, he is considered to be the most important German composer of Italian opera of his time and sacred music, known especially for his Passion oratorio Der Tod Jesu.

He became music director to Frederick the Great, (then crown prince and eventually King of Prussia) in 1735 and in 1740 recruited singers for Frederick’s Italian opera company. While in royal service, Graun composed about 30 operas to Italian words, two of them, Montezuma and Merope, to librettos by Frederick.

François-Joseph Gossec

François-Joseph Gossec (born Jan. 17, 1734, Vergnies, Hainaut, Austrian Netherlands [now in Belgium]—died Feb. 16, 1829, Passy, near Paris, France) was one of the principal composers of 18th-century France, whose symphonies and chamber works helped shape the orchestral forms of the Classical period in France. His musical compositions include operas, string quartets, symphonies, and choral works.

Mozart influenced Gossec, though their relationship was primarily one of mutual respect and creative exchange. The two composers were well acquainted. When Mozart visited Paris in 1778, the two became friends and colleagues. Mozart was encouraged by Gossec's work and visited him frequently.

Let us get acquainted with this amazing man, who was a pioneering French composer and conductor, celebrated as the "father of the French symphony". He bridged the Baroque and Classical eras, significantly expanding orchestral instrumentation, introducing novel choral effects, and co-founding what would become the Paris Conservatory.

Mikhail Glinka

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1 June 1804 – 15 February 1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country and is often regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music, the acknowledged founder of the Russian nationalist school. His compositions were an important influence on other Russian composers, notably the members of The Five (composed of Mily Balakirev (the leader), César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Borodin), who produced a distinctive Russian style of music.
