Henry Purcell

Today we remember the 329th Death Anniversary of the English Baroque composer, Henry Purcell who was born on 10 September 1659 and died on 21 November 1695. He lived to be 36 years old.

Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell has been assessed with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers.

Purcell worked in many genres, both in works closely linked to the court, such as symphony song, to the Chapel Royal, such as the symphony anthem, and the theatre.

Among Purcell's most notable works are his opera Dido and Aeneas (1688), his semi-operas Dioclesian (1690), King Arthur (1691), The Fairy-Queen (1692) and Timon of Athens (1695), as well as the compositions Hail! Bright Cecilia (1692), Come Ye Sons of Art (1694) and Funeral Sentences and Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary (1695).

After his death, Purcell was honored by many of his contemporaries and he also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century.

Thomas Schüle

Join DJ Berny with a live guest in the program featuring German-born Thomas Schüle, professor of Music Management and Musicology at the Liceo de Cagayan University in the Philippines.

After graduating with a Master´s in Musicology, he also completed training in Music Management. He has been an active Music Manager around the globe for 35 years, touring with orchestras and choirs, organizing music festivals, and arranging concerts with both world pop and classical artists.

Aside from being a choral singer himself for about 25 years, he has been a member of the Jury for national and international choir competitions in Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and in the Philippines.

It is our joy to have him, so listen to him share about his own musical journey which led him to collaborate with the most amazing Classical Music talents all over the world - from the budding enthusiasts to the most experienced professionals.

TODAY'S FEATURED MUSIC INFLUENCER
Frederick William Herschel

Frederick William Herschel (15 November 1738 – 25 August 1822) was a German-English composer, astronomer, biologist, organist, and conductor.

Herschel is best known for his work as an astronomer, including discoveries of the planet Uranus and being a founding member of what became the Royal Astronomical Society. He was also a biologist who published on the cellular construction of coral. As a composer, he was well regarded during his lifetime for his progressive and inventive works, particularly his symphonies.

Stylistically his symphonies are similar to Joseph Haydn in style. The works include 24 symphonies, 12 concertos (for viola, violin, oboe, and organ), 45 voluntaries, 24 caprices and a sonata for solo violin, six trio sonatas, three keyboard sonatas, a complete Anglican service, and numerous Psalms and anthems.

This afternoon we will focus on the piano. For true music lovers, the piano is the most versatile of all instruments. It is suggested that the piano should be the first instrument taught. The piano gives such rich sounds with each key that is pressed, to not just the person playing, but also all who listen to it. The piano is one of the best instrument all around due to many reasons. For one, it is the only instrument that can play all 88 notes on the musical scale. The notes played can be higher and lower than all other instruments.

To help us better appreciate this amazing instrument, we will travel from the Classical, Romantic and the Modern periods of music through the compositions of Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy and Dmitri Shostakovich. Featuring international artists Jonathan Biss, Trio Stradivari and Leonard Bernstein.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LA FINTA SEMPLICE
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

La finta semplice (The Fake Innocent), K. 51 (46a) is an opera buffa in three acts for seven voices and orchestra, composed in 1768 by then 12-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Young Mozart and his father Leopold were spending the year in Vienna, where Leopold was trying to establish his son as an opera composer. He was acting on a suggested request from the Emperor Joseph II that the young boy should write an opera.

Classical music and modern pop music have evolved over the centuries through the continuous innovation and creativity of composers and artists. The structure of music and the use of instruments have been changed over time to create better sounds. From a historical perspective, classical music and modern pop music are similar in that each has evolved over time, while they share similar techniques, but they were designed during different eras.

This afternoon though, we will explore classical musicians play and perform modern pop music and give us a glimpse of what it is to have a musical fusion of the old and the new.
