Today, Mindanao was shaken by one of the strongest and most destructive earthquakes to hit the region this 2026.

Reports say a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near southern Mindanao on the morning of June 8, triggering tsunami warnings, damaging buildings, disrupting power and communications, and causing fear across several communities. It was followed by strong aftershocks, including one reported around magnitude 6.5 to 6.7.

Earlier this year, Mindanao was also struck by a strong January quake measured by PHIVOLCS at magnitude 6.4 and by USGS at magnitude 6.7, making today’s disaster at least the third widely reported strong quake or tremor connected to Mindanao this 2026, not counting smaller earthquakes and aftershocks.

What makes this even heavier is that today is also the opening of classes for School Year 2026–2027. Many students were not in the comfort of their homes when the ground began to shake. Some were already in schools, classrooms, campuses, or on their way to begin a new school year.

In moments like this, we are reminded that life is fragile. Buildings can fall. Plans can be interrupted. Ordinary mornings can suddenly become moments of fear. But even when the ground shakes beneath us, our hope is anchored in the God who does not shake.

Psalm 46:1 says, β€œGod is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

So today, we pray for Mindanao.

We pray for the families who are afraid.

We pray for the students who were shaken on what should have been a hopeful first day of school.

We pray for the teachers, workers, rescuers, medical teams, and local leaders responding in the middle of uncertainty.

We pray for those who lost homes, livelihood, safety, and peace.

We pray for protection from aftershocks, wisdom for authorities, and comfort for every trembling heart.

May the Lord cover Mindanao with mercy.
May He strengthen the weak, calm the fearful, rescue the trapped, heal the wounded, and provide for every need.
May He remind every affected family that they are not forgotten.

The earth may shake, but God remains faithful.

The situation may be frightening, but His presence is near.
And as one nation, one body, and one people under God’s mercy, we lift Mindanao in prayer.
