Some goodbyes are carried by flowers, prayers, and the silence of people still trying to understand what happened.
Others seem to leave behind moments that refuse to feel ordinary.
Four separate dove sightings have now been reported in places closely connected to Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, creating a sequence that has stirred wonder, grief, and faith among those following his story.
The first sighting happened during Rene’s wake at Ateneo de Davao University.
Two doves were seen inside the venue, walking near the funeral wreaths prepared for the young student-athlete. In a place filled with mourning, the pair quietly moved across the floor as if unaware of the attention their presence would later receive.
The second sighting occurred when Rene was brought home to Talacogon.
At the Talacogon Evacuation Center, where his family, friends, teammates, and supporters gathered for his wake, two doves were seen on his casket, surrounded by flowers, photographs, jerseys, and tributes to the life he had lived.
Then, far from the wake, another sighting was recorded in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Two doves stood together near the shoreline, facing the waters of the place where Rene’s life tragically ended. For those who knew the connection, the image carried a painful stillness that two birds standing where a family’s life had been changed forever.
But the fourth and most recent sighting may be the most striking of all.
As members of Rene’s family traveled inside a vehicle on their way to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, or CIDG, a dove was seen flying above the car.
The family was not making an ordinary trip. They were heading toward another difficult chapter in the search for answers as the investigation into Rene’s death entered a critical stage.
Inside the vehicle were the people carrying his memory, their grief, and the weight of questions that remain unresolved.
Above them was a dove.
To some, the sightings may simply be coincidences. Doves and pigeons appear in public buildings, beaches, memorial venues, and busy roads. Not every bird carries a message, despite humanity’s long and determined habit of turning creation into symbolism.
But grief changes the way people see.
When someone deeply loved is gone, ordinary moments can suddenly feel sacred. A song becomes a memory. A breeze becomes an embrace. A bird appearing at the right place and time becomes a source of comfort.
For many Christians, the dove is a powerful spiritual symbol.
In Scripture, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove during the baptism of Jesus. In the story of Noah, a dove returned carrying an olive leaf, signaling that the floodwaters were receding and that life could begin again.
The dove has since become associated with peace, hope, purity, divine comfort, and the presence of God.
That is why these four sightings have touched so many grieving hearts.
They seem to trace the significant places in Rene’s journey... Ateneo de Davao, where his future as a student-athlete was being built; Talacogon, where his community welcomed him home; Dipaculao, where his earthly life ended; and the road toward the CIDG, where his family continues to seek truth.
No one can say with certainty what the appearances meant. Faith should not be forced into proof, and an investigation must still be guided by facts, evidence, and due process.
But for Rene’s family and the people mourning with them, the doves may feel like a quiet reassurance that they are not walking through this painful journey alone.
Perhaps the message grieving hearts are receiving is this:
Rene is no longer afraid.
He is no longer in pain.
He is no longer carrying the burden of what happened to him.
He is now in the best place he could ever be, held in the presence of God.
The fourth sighting does not promise that every question will immediately be answered. It does not replace the work of investigators or the family’s pursuit of truth.
But for people traveling toward an uncertain and difficult moment, the sight of a dove above their vehicle may have offered something just as necessary: peace for the journey, strength for what lay ahead, and the reminder that heaven had not forgotten them.
Perhaps Rene’s story is now asking something of those left behind, not only to remember him or to search for answers... but to come closer to God more than ever.
Life can change without warning. Dreams can be interrupted. Families can be left holding questions they never expected to ask.
Faith does not erase grief, and it does not make injustice acceptable. What it can do is give the heart somewhere to rest while truth is still unfolding.
The investigation must follow the evidence. Justice must follow the truth. And the public must allow the proper process to continue without turning speculation into judgment.
But amid the difficult days ahead, grieving hearts may hold on to one gentle possibility: that Rene is already at peace.

And believe that while Rene’s family continues its search for answers on earth, Bobet is already home.
