Ten years ago, he weighed ninety pounds and was too sick to be booked into jail.
Today, he holds a Computer Information Systems degree with a 4.0 GPA.
A decade ago, Danny M. Ellerd was homeless in Oklahoma City, battling a nearly twenty-year addiction to opiates. Relapse, broken relationships, and abandoned buildings defined his life. When felony warrants caught up with him, he wasn’t processed into jail. He was hospitalized because his body was failing.
Recovery didn’t happen in a dramatic moment. It happened slowly.
Through Hope Is Alive Ministries, Danny entered treatment and committed to rebuilding. He completed a residential program, stayed sober for thirty months, and began sponsoring others walking the same road. In August 2023, he was selected for Cohort 4 at the Center for Social Innovation at OSU OKC while working part time and starting college full time.
He pursued a degree in Computer Information Systems at Oklahoma State University Oklahoma City, earned multiple programming certifications, and maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Run Fact: Long-term recovery programs that combine structured treatment, community support, and education significantly increase sustained sobriety outcomes.
Danny says his past now feels like a bad dream. Not erased. Just no longer in control.
Ten years.
Same person.
Completely different life.
