End of an era. On Dec. 31, 2025, Victoria Plaza, Davao's first mall which opened in 1993, finally shut down its doors. I went to see it for the last time during its final hour. For a generation of kids who grew up in the 90s like me, this was a repository of childhood memories. But just like any emblem of consumer culture, of the relentless capitalist construction of cities, it is bound to crumble. An ephemeral emporium of ecstasies. For me, it was where my solo sojourns in moviegoing began, something that warrants a lengthy narrative purging in itself. Will wait for the ruins to rise, reifying our metropolitan dreams.

A last hurrah for a childhood fixture as the Agfa Photohouse draws its curtains today on its last day of operations. This building jutting out of the second-story block has witnessed generations of family, friends and colleagues pose, smile and bond over old-timey portraiture. Located along the city hall drive, it has been home to senior park photographers who would also have their films developed here. Photos taken in August 2023.

1. Lolo scavenging junk in an empty lot between Palma Gil and Roxas. I forgot this street's name. Either Guerrero or Artiaga or neither.
2. Another glimpse of the street and the old houses fronting the Barrio Pogi of my childhood.
3. You can practically go around downtown and this bldg would be the new reference point.
4. This now demolished building was once a seedy theater of my childhood. Including a parlor at the side whose parlorista my late mother is friends with.
5. They say the Roxas Night market has a dwindling patronage but vendors of ukay² are still abuzz putting up their tents for another night of trade. Also my first time along this canal walk.

lo-fi 🇹🇼

While I mainly use my secondhand low-res Canon camcorder for taking videos, I sometimes instinctually shift to photo mode to take some snaps. Here are the few ones I was able to capture.

A year ago today I saw this portion of Pelayo St. (Had to look up the street name!), fronting People's Park. I realized I hadn't posted snaps from this instant loss-inventory yet. There used to be a karaoke joint here and a karenderia (I think) but I dunno of others. The last time I passed by here the detritus of the demolition still remain, wild reeds peeking out from the flimsy galvanized iron wall.

Passed by this area along J.P. Laurel while walking from SPMC to the nearest J&T and this Art & Sign stall took me out of my reverie. I was thinking about this old-time trade which I thought was on the brink of fading away, and for the new generation, a bit anachronistic in the era of tarpaulins and digital screens. Glad to know they're still reliable. I was hoping to strike a convo with the owner but this stood there unmanned. Beyond the yellow wall of galvanized iron is a demolished area where a truck/machine shop used to be before it was overtaken by vines, graffiti, skateboarders, biker exhibitionists, and occasionally by students who practice dance numbers.

Fire razed this now abandoned theater in downtown Claveria days ago. I'm old enough to have seen this still operating when I was a kid, screening bold films. Local news I read online have not reported on the cause yet but we chanced upon someone after the photo walk who was eyeing the building. He said he was from the fire (or bldg?) department and alleged that the blaze resulted possibly from unattended cooking. I guess the abandoned theaters have been makeshift shelters of the homeless, similar to another rundown theater 2 blocks away, in a major highway that is an emblem of old Davao now experiencing a 'development' boom with tall buildings rising from old spaces. The once 'empires of light' are succumbing to metropolitan change.
