The University of the Immaculate Conception, under the College of Pharmacy and Chemistry (UIC-CPC), brought home the crown after emerging as champions in the recent National Pharmacy Debate Competition (NPDC) 2026 held at Lyceum of the Philippines University โ€“ Davao on May 10โ€“11, 2026.

NPDC is an annual nationwide tournament among pharmacy schools in the Philippines, challenging students to engage in rigorous debates on critical issues in healthcare, ethics, and pharmaceutical practice.

Under the team name โ€œTeam Beta Lactamase,โ€ the second-year pharmacy students, namely Lance Darcyll Gargar, Gene Keannu Miguel Kinazo, and Hannah, competed against the students from University of San Carlos in the grand finals round, where they debated the motion, โ€œThis House Believes That Richard and Nicole Should Use PGD to Ensure Their Child Is Deaf,โ€ and won through a 3โ€“2 split decision.

โ€œI was really relieved because, honestly, we were aiming for the championship. Both of our teams were aiming for a back-to-back championship since UIC has technically won two straight titles in the NPDC. On top of that, I was, of course, elated that we emerged as champions once again, bagging the title and bringing pride to UIC Pharmacy as well as to the UIC Debating Society,โ€ shared Mr. Gargar on their journey.

In the semi-finals round of the said competition, two teams from UIC, Team Beta Lactamase and Team UIC EMLA, faced off against each other in a heated match for a spot in the next round, highlighting UICโ€™s dominance in the competition as both teams successfully advanced to the semi-final stage.

โ€œWhen I saw that we were matched up in the semis, I was shocked as we were expecting and hoping that we would only spar during the Finals Round. To ease my mind, I just reminded myself that maybe it was a good thing; that it was a blessing; because whoever wins during our discourse, UIC would still represent its pride, wit, and grace to the Finals Round,โ€ Mr. Gargar added.

Moreover, the participants secured special distinctions, with Ms. Hannah being recognized as the 7th Best Speaker and Mr. Kinazo earned both the 2nd Best Speaker and Finals Best Speaker awards in the event.

Finishing strong, Mr. Joey Adrianne Bayonla from the UIC EMLA team was hailed as the Overall Best Speaker of the competition.

โ€œIt was both rewarding and fulfilling since we had extensively prepared for this competition. At the same time, this distinction is an affirmation that our efforts have indeed paid off. This feat is not only a product of my own efforts, but was also built and nurtured through all our practice rounds together with the other UIC team, so this achievement is shared with my mates as well,โ€ said Mr. Bayonla, adding that he found the award unexpected yet took pride in his ability to deliver his speeches as intended.

The UIC-CPC last captured the NPDC crown in 2024, earning the honor of hosting the 2025 competition, and with their 2026 victory, they are once again set to serve as host for next yearโ€™s debate.

The taste of home-cooked meals after a long and tiring day.
The warmth of a hand that gently wipes away your tears.
The familiar voice that reminds you to keep going when life feels too heavy to carry.

These are the quiet pieces of love our mothers leave within us, often unnoticed until we grow older and finally realize how much they truly carried.

Behind every gentle touch is a strength built through sacrifice. Behind every comforting smile were sleepless nights, silent worries, and countless moments of choosing others before themselves.

Mothers have always loved in the quietest ways, asking for nothing while giving everything they could.

Their love lives in the smallest details. In waiting for you to come home safely. In remembering the things you forget about yourself. In standing strong for everyone else even when life has already exhausted them.

They become the place we return to whenever the world feels too cold, too loud, or too heavy.

We celebrate not only mothers by blood, but every woman who became a source of comfort, guidance, and unconditional love. To all our mothers and mother figures, thank you for every sacrifice that went unseen and every act of love done so quietly.

A student journalist goes through different phases, each one, a shard that builds up character and a reflection of what they had gone through to polish their craft. Most, are starting to explore and grabbing a foothold on a new environment, others, only show up after what seems to be series of hardships brought about by life, and few are ending their journey to flip a new chapter.

These stories, divided by phases, but united by passion and endurance for journalism. To provide stories, capture moments, and invoke emotions had always been the goal of The Collegiate Immaculate.

Now that another volume had come to a pass, we humbly present the faces that served the student body this academic year 2025-2026.

Stay tuned for the newly appointed individuals of the Editorial Board for Volume 68.

See you next volume, Ignacian Marians!

The numbers tell a story of progress, but the bodies tell a story of persistence.

As of May 2026, the Philippines appears to be improvingโ€”at least on paper. It has climbed to 114th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, a modest rise from 116th in 2025, according to Reporters Without Borders as reported by Rappler. It is the kind of movement that can be easily celebrated, presented as proof that press freedom is alive and well.

But this is where the illusion begins.

Because while the rank rises, the reality does not. Reporters Without Borders still classifies the Philippinesโ€™ press freedom situation as โ€œdifficult.โ€ A climb in position does not mean safety, it can simply mean the rest of the world has worsened faster.

The Philippines has become its own favorite mascotโ€”waving international rankings as symbols of progress while ignoring the conditions that those numbers fail to capture. Rankings measure laws and rhetoric. But, they rarely measure the silence in a newsroom after a colleague is murdered.

And the silence is growing.

In 2025, the Philippines recorded three journalist killingsโ€”the highest in Asiaโ€”according to data reported by Inquirer.net, placing it among the deadliest countries for media workers and ranking fifth globally. These are not abstract figures. They are stories cut short, truths buried, and communities left without voices willing to risk everything.

For years, the Global Impunity Index told a similar story. Published by the Committee to Protect Journalists, it ranked the Philippines 9th in 2024. It is a stark reminder that justice for murdered journalists remains rare. Yet even this measure has been thrown into uncertainty. Reports from The Washington Post noted that the index faced scrutiny and was reportedly suspended following internal controversies.

Even the systems meant to measure injustice are unstable. But the reality they tried to capture remains unchanged.

This is the contradiction.

A country that climbs in rankings while remaining dangerous for those who tell the truth. A government that celebrates numbers while avoiding the deeper questionโ€”why does the cost of truth still include a bullet?

Because in this environment, perception becomes power. If the state can point to a rising rank as proof of progress, then the burden of proof quietly shifts away from the violence on the ground. The narrative is set, and the public is expected to accept it.

True press freedom is not measured by a number on a global list. It is measured by whether journalists can do their work without fear, and whether those who silence them are held accountable.

Until that changes, every improvement in rank will remain what it truly is: a coat of white paint over a blood-stained floor.

The ranking is a number. The blood is real. And until the Philippines stops turning truth-tellers into targets, its press freedom will remain nothing more than a well-disguised lie.

When content becomes currency, truth can become negotiable.

What trends, what sells, and even what matters are no longer decided in newsrooms alone, but in algorithms, virality, and influence.

๐‘ฒ๐’Š๐’๐’‚๐’๐’‚ ๐’๐’Š๐’š๐’ ๐’‘๐’‚ ๐’ƒ๐’‚ ๐’”๐’Š๐’๐’‚?

They say, โ€œnot all heroes wear capes.โ€ Sometimes, they carry a pen and a piece of paper.

Across the Philippines and around the world, voices are threatened, stories are buried, and silence is too often forced. Yet still, they writeโ€”through fear, through pressure, through uncertaintyโ€”because the truth must be told.

In the 33rd Year of World Press Freedom Day, we honor the voices who refuse to be silenced. The ones who ask when itโ€™s dangerous, who speak when itโ€™s easier to stay quiet, and who continue to stand their ground when everything tells them to stop.

Every truth written is an act of courage.

Every story told is a stand against silence.

Every voice raised is a quiet fight for freedom.

In a time when silence feels safer, choosing to tell the truth is the bravest act of all.

They may not wear capesโ€”but in every sense, they are heroes.
