Brokenshire College Incorporated, a respected institution under the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, held its 70th Baccalaureate & Commencement Exercise on May 19, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Davao. The meaningful occasion gathered graduating students, parents, faculty members, staff, and school administrators in thanksgiving and praise to God prior to the formal commencement rites.
Carrying the theme, โWalking With Jesus, Journeying with the Anawim,โ the service emphasized faith, renewal, and the importance of bringing spiritual values into the next chapter of the graduatesโ lives. The celebration opened with a solemn prelude and the lighting of the Christ candle, followed by the welcome address delivered by Bishop Hamuel G. Tequis, PhD (H.C), College President.
In his welcome address, Bishop Tequis warmly welcomed all attendees and reminded graduates that true success is not measured solely by academic excellence, but by a life rooted in Christ and service to others. Reflecting on the theme, he emphasized the importance of walking with Jesus and journeying with the Anawimโthe poor, humble, and marginalized members of society. He encouraged graduates to become leaders who serve with compassion, humility, and faith, reminding them that commencement is not merely an ending but โa sacred beginning.โ He also urged the graduates to become bearers of hope, healing, and love in a world longing for Christโs presence.
A call to celebration followed, where students, faculty, and guests responded in gratitude for the lessons learned, friendships formed, and opportunities ahead. The congregation then joined in the Hymn of Praise and an opening prayer, setting a reverent atmosphere of worship and thanksgiving.
The Baccalaureate Litany featured heartfelt affirmations from the minister, faculty members, parents, and graduating candidates, each expressing their commitment to walk faithfully with God and serve others with compassion and humility. Songs of praise, scripture readings, and symbolic offerings including a cross, Bible, lighted candle, flowers, fruits, money, diploma, medal, and toga represented the graduatesโ dedication to a life guided by faith, service, and purpose.
Moreover, the Word of God was proclaimed through both song and message. Rev. Rogelio M. Lofranco, Member of the BCI Board of Trustees, was introduced as the guest speaker. In his heartfelt message, he reminded graduates that every diploma carries stories of sacrifice, discipline, and silent struggles. Sharing his humble beginnings and personal hardships, he encouraged them to persevere despite challenges and to continue believing in their dreams even in difficult times.
โBehind that diploma is discipline; behind that moment is growth so celebrate this,โ Rev. Lofranco said.
He further reminded the graduates to remain humble and grounded in Christ, stressing that true success is measured not by wealth or recognition, but by perseverance, faith, and commitment through lifeโs hardships.
As the service concluded, the community responded with offerings and a doxology. A prayer of thanksgiving was led by the liturgist, asking for Godโs continued blessings upon the graduatesโ lives. An offering of symbols, thoughtfully prepared and deeply meaningful, was presented by Roderick R. Raut, MDiV. The ceremony was then concluded with the hymn โGoodness of God,โ followed by a prayer of consecration led by Rev. Grace A. Bangisan, DMin.
