The Beatitudes: God’s great paradox

"BLESSED are you who are poor... Blessed are you who are now hungry... Blessed are you who weep... Blessed are you when people hate you" (Lk 6:20-22). Seriously? Who calls poverty, hunger, tears, and persecution blessings? Christ does. This is the shocking paradox at the heart of the Beatitudes. They turn human logic upside down. The world says, "Blessed are the rich, the comfortable, the admired, and the successful." Christ says exactly the opposite....

MEMORIAL OF SAINT PETER CLAVER, PRIEST | September 9

Today we honor St. Peter Claver, the Jesuit missionary known as the "Slave of the Slaves Forever."

Serving in Cartagena, Colombia, during the 17th century, he welcomed enslaved Africans arriving by ship, providing food, medical care, catechesis, and the hope of Christ. His tireless ministry affirmed the dignity of every human person.

May St. Peter Claver inspire us to defend human dignity, stand with the marginalized, and become instruments of God's mercy.
