As an emblematic crescent moon graced the July 16th night sky, the dawn that followed marked the first suhoor (pre-dawn meal) of our Muslim counterparts in every corner of the world. It is this meal that accentuated the reality that the holiest month in the Islamic calendar have commenced, that the holy month of Ramadan have begun.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is the month of commemoration of the revelation of the Holy Qur'an, of one's reflection, repentance and redemption, of charity and empathy towards others' cause, of devotion, and of the observance of the fourth of the five pillars of Islam—Saum (fasting), which acquaints one with the suffering of those who are less fortunate and of the value of things that man usually takes for granted.
Thus, in this month where kindness is believed to be counted ten-fold, where the gates of Hell are closed and those of Heaven are welcoming, may our Muslim brothers' and sisters' dawn-to-dusk fasts translate into enlightenment, purified souls and appeased hearts, and their devotion, into all the benefits that this holy month entails.
May everyone benefit a blessed, generous and peaceful month of Ramadan.
