AdDU hosts Pakighinabi on Federalism

In pursuit of explaining the proposed federal system in the Philippines, the Community Engagement and Advocacy Council (UCEAC) of Ateneo de Davao University hosted the first-ever Pakighinabi: Usapang Pederalismo this 20th of September at the 7th Floor Finster Auditorium.

Consultative Committee (ConCom) member Atty. Antonio Arellano and ConCom Technical Working Group head Wendell Adrian Tamayo graced the event sharing their expertise on explaining the background and the purpose of the proposed federal system.

Hosted by Mr. Lunar Tan Fayloga, the chairperson of AdDU Theology Department, faculty and staff from different units were also present in the forum.

There were also simultaneous broadcasts that took place at both Martin and Arrupe Halls to cater senior high school and college learners.

“This is our first time to have this university-wide discussion [on federalism].” Fayloga said.

UCEAC Chair Atty. Romeo Cabarde, Jr. served as the moderator for the recently-concluded forum.

The resource speakers talked about the provisions that are present in the proposed federal constitution draft, as well as the historical development of federalism and the surrounding problems that the proposed federal system aims to solve.

KADAIYAHAN | “Life was hard in Marawi, so my wife went away to work abroad. When she came back, I was happy but she changed. She was no longer the woman I loved. Things suddenly became different. She didn’t love me anymore, and she left. But that’s all in the past now. It’s been four years since we separated, but I still think of my four-year-old son. So, I’m here in Davao, selling ukay-ukay to make ends meet. It’s not much but I think I’m starting over. Little by little, I’m moving forward, even if it means selling bargained clothing, one pair of pants at a time.” – Carding Pumbaya, Roxas Night Market

As an emblematic crescent moon graced the July 16th night sky, the dawn that followed marked the first suhoor (pre-dawn meal) of our Muslim counterparts in every corner of the world. It is this meal that accentuated the reality that the holiest month in the Islamic calendar have commenced, that the holy month of Ramadan have begun.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is the month of commemoration of the revelation of the Holy Qur'an, of one's reflection, repentance and redemption, of charity and empathy towards others' cause, of devotion, and of the observance of the fourth of the five pillars of Islam—Saum (fasting), which acquaints one with the suffering of those who are less fortunate and of the value of things that man usually takes for granted.

Thus, in this month where kindness is believed to be counted ten-fold, where the gates of Hell are closed and those of Heaven are welcoming, may our Muslim brothers' and sisters' dawn-to-dusk fasts translate into enlightenment, purified souls and appeased hearts, and their devotion, into all the benefits that this holy month entails.

May everyone benefit a blessed, generous and peaceful month of Ramadan.

This goes out for the superheroes who protected us from the monsters under our beds or the ones that lurk in the darkness when the kitchen lights are off.

This is for our first and biggest fans who clapped louder than the rest of the crowd for us.

This goes out for our first teachers who saw our potential and made sure that we would fulfill them.

This is for all our dear hardworking figures who go sleepless just to make our dreams a reality.

This goes out to our first teachers, coaches, caregivers, superhero, and everything we needed them to be.

To everyone's first best friend,
Happy Mother's Day!
